From proof-of-concept to operational institutionalization : organizational mechanisms of innovation scalin

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Large organizations increasingly rely on proof-of-concept (PoC) initiatives to explore and validate emerging technologies. However, technical validation does not automatically lead to operational institutionalization. Many innovations stagnate at the boundary between experimentation and sustained organizational embedding, where issues of ownership, governance, prioritization, and organizational fit become critical. Prior research has examined individual aspects of innovation implementation but has paid limited attention to how organizational mechanisms interact during the transition from successful experimentation to operational institutionalization. This thesis investigates which organizational mechanisms determine whether innovations move from a successful PoC to operational institutionalization in large organizations. It adopts a qualitative, pedagogical case research design based on nine semi-structured interviews with a large European automotive manufacturer. The study is presented in a case-teaching format, consisting of a case study, a research note synthesizing relevant theory, and a teaching note outlining pedagogical use. The findings identify five interdependent mechanisms shaping post-PoC institutionalization: structural alignment; governance and budget ownership transfer; portfolio positioning under resource scarcity; incentive alignment; and political sponsorship. The study conceptualizes post-PoC institutionalization as a multidimensional organizational alignment challenge rather than a purely technological or economic decision, contributing to research on innovation implementation and offering a teaching framework for analyzing scaling decisions.
