Casual workers and capitalist industry in Dakar, Senegal
| Resumo: | The labour market in the urban areas of underdeveloped capitalist economies such as Senegal allocates extremely imperfectly those members of the labour-force who are surplus to the current requirements of 'formal' private enterprises and public entities, and who have few or no skills from which they might profit via the petty production of commodities (the 'informal sector'), and who have only their own labour-power to sell on a day-to-day basis. This short extract from more extensive research on Dakar's casual labourers demonstrates that rather than being somehow 'outside' the capitalist economy, they form an integral part of it. |
