Approach to the Main Primary Headaches and Neuralgias in the Emergency Room: Guidelines from the Portuguese Headache Society
| Resumo: | Headache is one of the most common neurological symptoms and one of the most common complaints in the emergency setting. While it is essential to recognize headache red flags and potential secondary headaches, it is equally important to adequately manage primary headaches, often overlooked and under-treated in this sector. This is valid for both the adult and children populations. Acutely, medication such as triptans (for migraine and cluster headache), high flow oxygen therapy (for cluster headache), intravenous drugs such as laçosamide, phenytoin and levetiraectam (for trigeminal neuralgia), and indomethacin (for non-cluster trigeminal-autonomic cephalalgias) should be available in the emergency department (ED) and always considered, depending on patient’s comorbidities and possible contraindications. This document summarizes the authors’ recommendations on the treatment of the most common primary headaches and neuralgias in the ED. |
