A Kantian Approach to the Question of Generational Autonomy

View document

Bibliographic Details
Summary:This essay is a philosophical reflection on the question of generational autonomy. In this sense, it enquires into each generation’s capacity to be autonomous. It works mainly with a Kantian approach to autonomy, not only due to its historical relevance but also because it allows us to combine both freedom and responsibility. The main focus is to understand how a generation can hinder another generation’s autonomy, by exercising in it its domination power. Therefore, in order to develop a generational autonomy theory, I dialogue with literature on generational sovereignty and intergenerational exploitation and domination. Finally, I try to understand in which way autonomy matters for intergenerational justice, besides being an essential element for democratic legitimacy.
