The era of hyperconnectivity: investigating the times for PhD supervision
| Summary: | This chapter presents and discusses the results of a qualitative study developed in Portugal and Brazil regarding PhD time and the scientific supervision processes, focusing on the way digital technologies are used during the preparation time of doctoral theses. Based on the analysis of data collected by 20 structured interviews with students and supervisors, the main advantages and disadvantages of online technologies during scientific supervision are examined. In an academic and social context of high acceleration and time fragmentation, research presents valid development perspectives for a re-evaluation of supervision processes, more specifically in the current context marked by the presence of online platforms. Amongst other, the chapter shows that students and supervisors consider that the process of making the PhD implies face to face and presential relationships, demanding continued communication. In this sense, although they value the use of online technologies, they consider the physical proximity between students and supervisors fundamental, particularly in the phases that require theoretical or methodological decision-making. |
