Resumo:Euryhalinity is a necessary characteristic in estuarine inhabitants. This study evaluated the osmoregulatory effects of salinity variations in the tropical estuarine bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana. To estimate the osmoregulatory capabilities specimens were collected alive in estuary of Curu river, Ceará, and carried to the laboratory in containers with some water of the estuary. The osmoregulatory ability of Anomalocardia brasiliana was determined by following two procedures. Firstly, by measuring the hemolymph osmolality in various salinity concentrations (0,9; 2,0; 3,5; 4,9; 5,1° BRIX) and different time scales (30, 60, 90, 120 e 300 minutes). Secondly, by comparing the hemolymph osmorality with the medium’s osmorality and by testing the hypothesis of osmoregulation using estatistic models. The results showed the specimens could regulate their hemolymph osmorality in all the different salinity concentrations and time scales. Therefore, this research added important information about the physiology of the estuarine tropical bivalve A. brasiliana due to the capability of osmotic regulation that the species possess.
