Resumo:The main goal of this study was to analyze the potential of urban residential expansion of Tubarao, Santa Catarina, considering the presence of Permanent Protection Areas (PPA) of hydric resources located in the city. As to accomplish it, geologic, pedologic, and mineralogic data were collected, as well as bibliographic research on national and state environmental legislations. After the data collection, it was established the scenarios for land use and occupation. These were classified in: unlikely to occur, likely to occur and ideal situation. Then, the treatment of data was conducted as to transform the obtained information in urbanistic indexes, as to serve as a parameter in the elaboration of hydric resources PPA’s geographic location maps. This process enabled the gathering of quantitative data to analyze the potential of urban residential expansion of Tubarao in relation to the presence of the cited PPA’s, and it permitted the study to find its aimed results. It was proven that around 7% of the area of urban residential expansion (2,662 km²) of the city must be addressed as permanent protection areas of hydric resources. Besides the high percentage obtained, a reduction on its value to 1,017 km² (2,67%) is possible if the municipal environmental agencies position itself and alter the urban residential expansion zones to consolidated urban areas. That would diminish the length of PPA’s from 30 meters from regular riverbed of water bodies, to 15 meters of distance, at least.
