Bibliographic Details
Summary:Active Video Games (AVG) can increase energy expendure (EE) when compared to sedentary behavior activities, such as watching television. In addition, these activities promote enjoyment, however, it is not well established in the literature if there are sex differences. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to compare the energy expenditure and enjoyment of the older adults during activities on the Xbox Kinect with sedentary behavior (television) in relation to sex. Thirty-two older adults were allocated in the Male Group (n = 15) or Female Group (n = 17). All participants perform activities on the VGA Xbox Kinect (Stack'in up, Zen - Develop it, Pump it, Wall bracker and Hurricane) and watched television. Metabolic and cardiovascular variables and degrees of enjoyment were evaluated. There was a significant difference between groups x activities for EE and enjoyment (p <0.05). EE and enjoyment were greater during Xbox Kinect activities in both groups compared to sedentary behavior (p <0.05). The EE during activities on Xbox Kinect (stacking and pumping) was higher in some activities for the male group compared with the female group (p <0.05). In addition, female group reported a greater level of enjoyment during Xbox Kinect activities compared with sedentary behavior (p <0.01). A greater degree of enjoyment was also observed in the female compared with male for all activities performed on Xbox Kinect (p <0.01). Thus, we concluded there is a sex differences. Male group presenting a greater EE in some Xbox Kinect activities and Female greater degree of enjoyment in all activities. In addition, Female group report a greater level of enjoyment playing the Xbox Kinect when compared to sedentary behavior activities.
