Resumo:The aim of the present study was to analyze the male amateur cyclists’ performance of knee’s extensors and flexors muscles. Participated of the study twenty male amateur road cyclists, with a mean age of 37.70 (±4.34) years, mean time of sports practice of 12.05 (±7.99) years, mean frequency of weekly training of 4.75 (±1.16) days, and average weekly distance traveled of 301.90 (±97.44) kilometers. To evaluate the performance of the knee’s extensors and flexors muscles, an isokinetic dynamometer was used, on concentric-concentric mode, at angular velocities of 60°/s., 120°/s., 180°/s. and 240°/s. The parameters analyzed were the peak torque of knee’s extensors and flexors muscles and flexor/extensor ratio. Student's paired t test was used to verify asymmetries between limbs and a significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. In the comparison between the dominant limb and the non-dominant limb, no statistically significant differences were observed between the limbs, both in the analysis of the mean values of peak torque and the flexor/extensor ratio at all angular velocities evaluated. The results suggest, in amateur cyclists, the cyclical movements with identical bilateral requirements may be responsible for the symmetries found. However, low values of the flexor/extensor ratio indicate muscle imbalances between knee’s extensors and flexors muscles, which can result in a higher risk of injury.
