Resumo:The development of the carious lesion comprises a multifactorial and dynamic set of events. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the dietary pattern of the children attended in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of the Federal University of Sergipe (Lagarto), and to evaluate the relationship of diet with the presence of influencing factors of the caries disease, in order to verify the influence of dietary habits on oral health. The steps of this research consisted of analyzing the anamnesis and the food diary, collecting data such as age, sex, toothbrushing frequency, flossing, use of fluoride dentifrice and the simplified oral hygiene index (IHOS) contained in the clinical records of each patient. The evaluation of the diaries was performed considering the cariogenic potential index (PC) of each diet. Data were submitted to statistical analysis according to the nature of their distribution. The significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyzes. Of the 40 questionnaires analyzed, 30 were included in the study. It was observed that 40% of the patients had low cariogenic potential index, 53% presented moderate PC and 7% of patients, high PC. the PC had no significant correlation with sex (p = 0.45), categorized age (p≥0.05), brushing frequency (p≥0.05), flossing (p = 0.63), use of fluoride dentifrice (p = 0.91) or IHOS (p≥0.05) of the clinical records analyzed. It was concluded that a large part of the patients presented a moderate PC. in addition, although it was not possible to identify a significant correlation/association between the cariogenic potential index and the variables studied, the importance of applying preventive measures and periodic monitoring in children in order to control the etiological factors involved in the installation and progression of the caries disease is highlighted.
