Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:This paper presents a historical approach to social representations of health and illness in the essentially rural population of the Minho region in the eighteenth century. For this purpose a large-case study of the faithful of Minho has been carried out, based on the analysis of the Parish Memories from 1758, in the districts of Braga and Viana do Castelo. The results show that the relationship between people and disease, in that specific population and in that historical moment, was filled with magical and religious element. Furthermore, it was inhabited by feelings of fear and guilt, which were mitigated through a religious experience based on Catholics references. Permeated by ancient cultural elements, often pagan in origin, these feelings were expressed in a public way, indicating the coexistence of local culture and the official doctrine of the Church.
