Internship Reports and Monograph Entitled"Nanocomposites as scaffolds for bone regeneration"
| Resumo: | Bone is a dynamic and complex tissue that performs vital functions in our bodies, such as simple locomotion. Following a fracture, bone has the natural ability to self-heal. However, in large defects and bone diseases with an imbalance in bone remodeling, such as osteoporosis, this capacity is not sufficient. Major interventions are therefore required, such as implants or bone grafts, which are usually accompanied by chronic pain, patient morbidity, risk of infection and disease transmission. In fact, bone fractures pose a real risk to public health and are translated into both an economic and a social burden. Furthermore, the incidence of bone disorders has increased worldwide and Portugal is following this trend, prompting the need for new alternatives. It is estimated that 17% of portuguese women and 2.6% of men are affected by osteoporosis, the leading cause of fragility fractures. Therefore, scaffolds, which are biocompatible, biodegradable and with mechanical and biological properties compatible with natural bone emerge as ideal alternatives. In addition, the combination of a polymeric matrix and nano-fillers results in a composite with superior properties and which shows promising results in the bone defect healing, under osteoporotic conditions. Thus, this review focuses on the design, manufacture and in vitro and in vivo performance of polymer nanocomposites in order to fulfill their potential in bone tissue regeneration and as strategies to overcome the drawbacks of current interventions and deliver a better quality of life to the patient. |
