Resumo:Human excretion is the main source of pharmaceutical residues in the aquatic environment, with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) being one of the main contributors to this contamination. This promotes the transfer of these compounds and their metabolites to surface and deep-sea waters, alongside their exposure to living beings.Considering that WWTPs do not remove all pharmaceuticals, a wastewater polishing process was evaluated using clams of the Corbicula fluminea species. These tests were carried out within the scope of the BIOFREE project, a “Semente” project from University of Coimbra. For this purpose, wastewater, clams and suitable containers were used for the development of this study. Different parameters were evaluated, such as exposure time, reuse of the clams and their removal effectiveness. The water samples were subsequently analyzed by Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) and detected and quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled to Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-ToF-MS). My contribution to this project involved the filtration and extraction of water samples from the tests carried out.The results of this study prove its efficiency with statistically significant removal percentages, particularly for antihypertensives (48.3%), neuropharmaceuticals (42.9%) and antibiotics (35%). It was also found that there is no significant difference between tests with exposure times of 24h (36.7-37.8%) and 48h (38.7-44.7%), and the reuse of the clams with values comparable removal rates is possible. The execution of this work allowed the research of a new type of polishing treatment to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater with promising results, contributing to the use and implementation of sustainable and low-cost methods in WWTPs.
