Understanding the transport of poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous solutions containing sodium perchlorate
| Resumo: | The sodium-ion battery is gaining a lot of traction and could replace the lithium-ion battery in the next decades. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) were previously used as polymer and ionic source, respectively, to prepare solid electrolytes for sodium batteries. To better understand the interactions between PVA and NaClO4, which are crucial for optimizing battery performance, tracer diffusion coefficients for PVA in aqueous systems containing NaClO4 at 0.001 and 0.010 mol dm−3 solutions, were obtained at 298.15 K by using the Taylor dispersion technique. Additionally, conductimetric, density and viscosity measurements were performed to further investigate this system. The binding ability of polymer and cations influences ionic conduction of electrolytes, thus, in solution studies can be an important tool to assess the former. We found significant effects on the diffusion behavior of PVA in the presence of NaClO4, with the diffusion coefficient of PVA increasing by up to 35 %. This suggests the occurrence of salting-out effects, mainly in solutions 0.010 mol dm−3 NaClO4. These findings are corroborated by the increase in activity coefficients and viscosities after the addition of this salt in PVA solutions, indicating that PVA-water interactions are not promoted. Moreover, the conductivity of NaClO4 solutions decreased in the presence of PVA, which we attribute to the competition by the two species for hydration. Thus, we could grasp an understanding regarding the effect of this salt on the transport behavior of aqueous PVA solutions and make a contribution to the understanding this system’s behavior in the context of battery development. |
