Resumo:Introduction: Treatment teeth with open apices is an endodontic and restorative challenge. The apexification technique has been associated with high success rates. In our eight cases the treatment option was apexification technique with MTA, tricalcium phosphate and BiodentineTM. MTA has been studied extensively and because of its excellent properties was the material most used in apexification technique in last years. Due to its inherent drawbacks other calcium silicate cements were used in apexification technique. The aim to treat this teeth is them long retention time. For that reason, the choice of a restorative treatment that reinforce or prevent root fractures like adhesive restoration technique extended into root canal system is essential.Aim: This case series aimed to evaluate long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of seven nonvital immature teeth treated with apexification technique and adhesive corono-radicular restoration.Materials and Methods: This case series had the ethical approval of the Ethical Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Coimbra. All five subjects were informed and signed the informed consent. A evaluation protocol was defined with inclusion of clinical and radiographic criteria. A blind observer evaluated each case following the established protocol. This case series included six subjects with eight teeth treated. Results: One of the teeth was lost because was considered a clinical and radiographic failure; The other six teeth were asymptomatic at clinical evaluation, but two teeth were considered a radiographic failure because of periapical radiolucency. On colour evaluation just one teeth had a grey shadow on the cervical area of the crown. Concerning to restoration evaluation, just one teeth have to substitute the coronal restoration.Discussion: Previous clinical studies reported a high success rate with apexification technique with MTA, and, less, with BiodentineTM to treat teeth with open apices. Many factors can influence the outcome of this technique but the combination of corono-radicular adhesive restorations and materials that have similar mechanical properties to dentin with this apexification technique may lead to a long-term success. In this case series, although with a limited number of cases but a long-term follow-up (range of five to twenty-two years) six teeth were considered a clinical success, which is in accordance with literature. Conclusions: Despite the limitations of our case series, the combination of these two techniques seems to be the best choice to achieve the long term survival of these group of teeth with necrotic pulps and immature root development. Key-Words: Apexification, Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, BiodentineTM, tricalcium phosphate, corono-radicular adhesive restoration, necrotic pulp, open apices.
