Bibliographic Details
Summary:This work aimed to identify and analyze strategies for commemorating the deaths of medieval Christians, based on the parish universe organized around the collegiate church of Santiago de Coimbra, which was studied according to the principles of microhistory. To this end, we selected as sources the Book of Anniversaries of the Colegiada de Santiago de Coimbra and 41 original documents (wills, transfers of testamentary clauses and postmortem donations) preserved in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo. To collect and analyze information, the Time Link system was used as part of the exploratory project COMMEMORtis – What survives after death? Parish communities and strategies for commemorating the dead in the medieval city (EXPL/HAR-HIS/0532/2021).We divide this thesis into three chapters, the first being dedicated to the parish network of Coimbra, the urban insertion of the parish of Santiago and the cult of the pilgrim apostle and its expansion in the Iberian Peninsula. In the second chapter, we aim to characterize the people who founded funeral and soul suffrage ceremonies in the said church, studying their social, family and professional relationships. In conjunction with this social characterization, the types of stipulated ceremonies were identified and studied, as well as the heritage allocated to their maintenance. Finally, in the third chapter we analyze the ways of commemorating the dead in Santiago through the motivations and orders of those celebrated; the dates defined for celebration and the types of divine services requested. Furthermore, we covered, in the best possible way, the space of the temple in question from the altars, private chapels, and other places intended for the rest of the bodies, identified in its anniversary book. With the study carried out, we intend to present here a simple contribution to the history of the parish and the collegiate of Santiago de Coimbra – institutions that have documentation rich in information – and, therefore, to the history of the medieval city in which it was located.
