Ecopontos Florestais - A gestão e valorização da biomassa e a prevenção dos incêndios florestais
| Resumo: | Promoting the use of forest biomass is a central theme in national and European energy and forestry policies and strategies. The increasing use of biomass as an energy source in the 21st century will have a significant impact on rural, agricultural and forestry development and will contribute to increasing the economic sustainability of the Portuguese forest and to fire prevention. The use of biomass from agroforestry residues enhances rural development and reduces the amount of rural fires thanks to the cleaning of the land and its biomass, rather than the burning of this waste where it is deposited. The use of biomass provides forest clearance, thus reducing the risk of fire. It also facilitates the use of brush and forestry waste, providing a type of selective collection at source, avoiding sending them to landfill, while allowing their recovery (energy recovery, in this case). It also contributes to job creation and local development. This waste is particularly important, especially when it is available in large quantities, as it contributes to the circular economy and decarbonization.Due to its territorial organization and the type of occupation and land use, the central region of mainland Portugal has a high propensity to the occurrence of wildfires, being this area abundant in agroforestry biomass of which not a good use has been made.Waste is frequently left in place, often forming heaps, or is burned due to the high costs of collecting it. A key aspect is the redesign of the forest biomass supply chains, namely the collection, pre-processing and transportation processes, with a view to reducing logistical costs and increasing the quantity and iversity of forest biomass sources effectively used.Portugal is a country with a high potential for the use of this type of fuel, due to its prominent forest area. Therefore, after familiarization with the topic and specifically with the concepts, the fundamental objective will be to analyze the potential of implementing a network of Agro-forest dumping points in the study area, the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region. |
