Introduction: The assessment of handgrip strength is an important tool in the planning and evaluation of geriatric and rehabilitation care. Provides valuable information about the functionality of the individual and helps to implement and monitor strategies aiming to preserve or restore muscle strength. Objectives: Understand the relationship between age, the values obtained by two methods of assessment of the handgrip strength and up and go test (functional evaluation). Material and Methods: We designed descriptive quantitative and cross study. To evaluate the handgrip strength we used a Dinatest® dynamometer and a Jamar® hydraulic dynamometer. We selected the best result of two attempts (peak isometric force). To evaluate the functionality and physical fitness of the elderly we used the test Timed Up and Go Test, whose reliability is well studied in the literature. Results: The sample consisted of 77 older adults (49 women) and the mean age was 81.40 years, without significant differences between genders. The youngest had 65 years and the oldest 97. In both evaluation methods, the right hand yielded better results than the left. Men showed strength values higher than women. We found that hand strength declines with age, as is denoted by the negative correlations found. We could also observe that the test up and go correlates negatively with all forms of assessment of hand grip strength, which means that whoever has more power runs the test up and go in less time. Note also that the test up and go is positively correlated with age (older individuals need more time to run the test). Discussion and Conclusion: We found statistically significant associations between the two kinds of assessment of hand grip strength in the elderly. We also have very similar associations when compared the different tests to assess hand grip strength and a functional assessment (up and go test). We conclude by the validity of using any of these devices in clinical practice and the choice of one or another should take into account the costs thereof.
