From João das Regras to the Royal Council: men of law in the affirmation of the new dinasty

    Publication
by de Carvalho Homem, Armando Luís
    Origin: Medievalista
The organization of bureaucratic officiality after 1383-1385 essentially reproduces what had been outlined between the 30s and the 70s of the 14th. Century. When it comes to specific officers, the scene differs, since there is an obvious renewal of bureaucrats, mainly clerics and lawmen. The 15th. Century will be, already in the days of King John I, a time when official status is held longer, being increasingly categorized as careers. As for the Royal Council, the king reserves to himself the right to organize the political level of the governmental organs (of more or less intense activity), and to appoint their members. The new dynasty will also reinforce the legal image of royalty, through idea of King-legislator, not so much as the result of creation, as of collection and systematization of the law in force.   Bibliography Printed sources: LIVRO das Leis e Posturas. A no-reference (NR) method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) approach is proposed in this paper to estimate the objective quality of video-plus-depth streams subject to packet loss in depth data. A novel aspect of this method is the use of information only taken from packet headers, up to the network abstraction layer (NAL), requiring a very low complexity parsing of the compressed video streams. A maximum of seven packet-layer parameters were found to be enough to provide accurate objective quality estimates given by the structural similarity index (SSIM). The accuracy of the quality estimates, evaluated by comparison with the actual SSIM quality scores, is shown to be sufficiently high (e.g., Pearson Linear Correlation Coefficient over 0.92) for lightweight implementations of 3D video quality monitors at end-user receivers and also at network nodes.

Purpose Impaired emotional learning is one of the hallmark features of psychopathy. The abnormal processing of cues of reward and punishment, and its impact in decision‐making, has mostly been supported by laboratorial studies. In this report, we have analysed the effect of psychopathy in the formation of attitudes towards committing theft, and its impact in the intention to reoffend after release. Methods A self‐report instrument to characterize the predictors of the intention to reoffend was developed and administrated, along with the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure, to a sample of 91 male inmates convicted for theft. Results The perceived rewards of theft mediated the association between psychopathic traits and the intention to reoffend. The analysis of the expectancy and value components of the attitude towards theft showed that psychopathic traits are associated with reduced expectancy of negative outcomes and increased expectancy of positive outcomes as a consequence of reoffending. Conclusions Our results add support to the role of disrupted expectancy–value learning and increased reward sensitivity as mediators of the increased probability to reoffend in psychopathy.

Introduction: Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA) remain a therapeutic challenge for vascular surgeons. We report a Crawford extent type III TAAA managed with the “simplified technique”1 to approach TAAA associated to endograft implantation in the proximal aortic anastomosis to minimize the risk of blowout of the aortic stump. Case Report: A 43-year-old female patient was evacuated from Mozambique with a history of TAAA and admitted in our emergency department with recent chest and abdominal pain. She had history of HIV infection and pulmonary tuberculosis. The physical examination revealed a painful, pulsatile abdominal mass and the computed tomographic angiography (CTA) an 8cm type III TAAA without signs of rupture. The aneurysm morphology was not adequate for endovascular treatment and, due to the immediate unavailability of the usual adjuncts for Crawford technique (ECC and selective visceral perfusion), this symptomatic patient was submitted to a thoraco-phreno-laparotomy with left medial visceral rotation. A bifurcated Dacron 18x9mm graft was distally anastomosed in an end-to-side fashion to both external iliac arteries and proximally to a 22mm polyester four branched graft (Jotec®). This later graft was proximally anastomosed to the descending thoracic aorta (end-to-side) with no visceral or renal ischemia. The aorta distal to the anastomosis was then cross-clamped as well as the infra-renal segment, the aneurysm opened, and no patent intercostal arteries were visible. The lower limb perfusion was maintained by the lateral shunt. Both kidneys were cooled with lactated Ringer’s solution through Pruitt catheters and the visceral arteries were temporarily occluded with Fogarty catheters. The four anastomoses were sequentially performed to the right renal artery, superior mesenteric artery, celiac trunk and left renal artery. After completing all the reconstructions, a Zenith Alpha® 32x155mm endograft was implanted from the descending thoracic aorta to the pre-branch segment of the lateral shunt. The operation was uneventful, and the patient remained hemodynamically stable. The postoperative period was complicated by pulmonary infection and the postoperative CTA revealed the occlusion of the left renal artery graft (without clinical or laboratory repercussion). The patient was discharged 50 days after the operation due to social reasons. Conclusion: The adjunct of an endograft to the “simplified technique” was previously described2 and allows to overcome the risk of aortic stump blowout which is one of the major limitations of this technique. This strategy was a successful alternative to manage a TAAA since organ-protection adjuncts to the Crawford technique were not available.

Scheduling is essential for the efficient planning of manufacturing enterprises and ultimately for its competitiveness. Cyber-physical production systems have been using heuristics to implement scheduling algorithms. Heuristics have the advantage of being fast to reach a solution, that is usually not the optimal one but close to optimal. Recent advances in mathematical optimization solvers have improved their performance and hence make them a contender to solve scheduling problems which were traditionally out of reach in terms of computation time feasibility. In this work, the authors compare the output and performance of two mathematical solvers, Z3 and Gurobi, with a game theoretic approach to solve a Flexible Job-Shop Scheduling Problem. To formulate the scheduling problem, an integer programming approach with the Picat programming language was used. The study found that the Z3 and Gurobi solvers outperformed the game theoretic approach, finding a better solution with a fast computation time for a relatively small but realistic problem size.

The technological features of the grave goods from Anta do Malhão and Soalheironas perfectly fit the metallurgical tradition of communities inhabiting the Southwestern Iberia during a period of transition from the 3rd to the 2nd millennium BC. Arsenical copper alloys began to be used for prestige goods of the 3rd millennium BC, becoming the standard for artefacts of the 2nd millennium BC, thus indicating the growing awareness of MBA metallurgists of the aesthetic and practical value of this silvery alloy.

Compositional and microstructural outlook of grave goods from Anta do Malhão and Soalheironas (Portugal): the diachronic use of arsenical copper in southwestern Iberian Peninsula

Although in recent years the prehistoric metallurgy of southwestern Iberian Peninsula has become increasingly well understood, the southernmost region still requires additional research. This work presents the technological study of artefacts from burial contexts located in this area, namely the necropolises of Anta do Malhão and Soalheironas (Algarve region). Typologies of metalwork and pottery ascribe the single inhumation at Anta do Malhão to a late phase of the “Ferradeira Horizon” (last quarter of the 3rd millennium BC), while assigning the necropolis of cists at Soalheironas to an earlier phase of the Middle Bronze Age (1st half of the 2nd millennium BC). The elemental and microstructural composition of artefacts was established by micro-energy dispersive Xray fluorescence spectrometry, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis. Results show artefacts made of arsenical copper alloys (2.01–3.40% As) with very low iron content (< 0.05% Fe). The microstructures display deformed equiaxed grains with annealing twins and slip bands, evidencing cycles of hammering and annealing, followed by a finishing hammering operation. The integration of results in the prehistoric metallurgy of southwestern Iberian Peninsula suggests a shared technological tradition, while a more comprehensive discussion discloses important developments involving the increased production of strainhardened tools and weapons, together with a rising substitution of the copper metal by arsenical copper alloys from the 3rd to the 2nd millennium BC.

The idea of monitoring several types of parameters in various environments has been motivating significant research works in Internet of Things (IoT). This paper presents the design and construction of iSensA, a system for integrating and collecting information from sensors. The solution implements a multi-sensor monitoring system and then expands the monitoring concept to an IoT solution, by employing multi-network access, Web services, database and web and mobile applications for user interaction. iSensA system is highly configurable, enabling several monitoring solutions with different types of sensors. Experiments have been performed on real application scenarios to validate and evaluate our proposition.
