Introduction – The functional physical fitness (FpF) level in patients admitted to Medium Duration and Rehabilitation Integrated Continuous Care Units (MDR-ICCU) and the functional limitations associated with these patients remain unknown. Objective – To assess the FpF of patients admitted to MDR-ICCU after completing a physiotherapy program and compare the FpF results between patients with and without a stroke diagnosis. Methods – Assessment of FpF through Senior Fitness Test Battery and with Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and handgrip strength in patients with different diagnoses at discharge, and comparing results between patients with and without a stroke diagnosis. Results – In most of the domains evaluated (strength, flexibility, body mass index (BMI), agility, and aerobic endurance), the results were below the reference values found in other studies for the Portuguese population. However, differences between groups of patients with (CAVC) and without a diagnosis of stroke (SAVC) were observed in the domains of upper limb muscle strength and BMI (p<0.005). Conclusion – It seems that patients diagnosed with stroke present a higher risk of frailty and functional decline, especially in upper limb muscle strength.

Salmonella is a Gram-negative flagellated rod-shaped bacterium that is one of the most important etiological agents in bacterial foodborne diseases [1,2]. Despite human salmonellosis generally presenting as a self-limiting episode of enterocolitis, the infection can degenerate into chronic and debilitating conditions [2]. To diagnose a Salmonella infection, standard cultural methods are routinely used, which implies bacterial identification by biochemical and serological tests, to confirm the suspect colonies grown on the selective agar [3]. However, this methodology is time-consuming and takes too long to deliver the results [4]. Due to these limitations, more rapid techniques for detection have been developed [5-7]. For that, in this study, we developed a novel Peptide Nucleic Acid Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (PNA FISH) method for the specific detection of Salmonella spp. The method was based on a new PNA probe, SalPNA1692, coupled with a novel blocker probe in a 1:1 ratio. The method was optimized for the detection of Salmonella in food samples through an evaluation of several rich and selective enrichment broths. The best outcome was achieved using Buffered Peptone water as a pre-enrichment for 24 h followed by 16 h of selective enrichment in RambaQuick broth. For validation in food samples, fresh ground beef was artificially contaminated with two ranges of inoculum: a low level (0.22 CFU/25 g) and a high level (210 CFU/25 g). For both levels of contamination, the confirmed positives were the same comparing the PNA-FISH method and the reference method (ISO 6579-1: 2017). The new PNA-FISH method presented a specificity of 100 % and is a faster time-to-result method, making it a good candidate for routine application in food safety laboratories.

Poderá a morte ser «boa»? A eutanásia à luz da Sagrada Escritura

    Publicação
    por Sousa, Mário
For biblical thinking, death is not only an anthropological drama, but it is also theological. God created the human being so that it became “a living being” (Gn 2,7) and the finality of Jesus coming is to offer “life in abundance” (Jn 10,10). To kill or to kill oneself is to radically and definitively reject participation in this life, meaning, salvation.

Electronic cordel: Preservation and accessibility in the cordel literature

    Publicação
    por Sousa, Mário Santos
This study addresses the accessibility challenges inherent in the “cordel” literature, a culturally rich form of Brazilian poetry designated as national heritage. Traditional “cordel” leaflets, while culturally significant, present barriers to dissemination and preservation, particularly for print-disabled individuals. The study emphasizes the potential of digitization, as exemplified by the e-cordel project, to enhance accessibility. Despite its promising features, the current version of e-cordel exhibits limited accessibility features. The primary aim is to advance the e-cordel project by introducing new accessibility features and exploring the direct integration of accessibility into content through the EPUB3 format. Motivated by the need to address the cultural importance of “cordel” and its accessibility shortcomings, the study employs a design-based research methodology, focusing on real-world problem-solving and tool validation. Evaluation involves testing the system with a diverse population, prioritizing inclusivity, and utilizing questionnaires and interviews to assess the viability of the new format.
