In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Local Accommodation has been increasing. It allowed the rehabilitation of degraded properties, offering accommodation in atypical areas and indirectly contributing to other sectors of activity. With an increase in this market, it is important to understand the players. It is within this scope that this empirical study emerged. Through a questionnaire administered to 266 people, it was sought to understand the profile of the investor in this type of market and to map the distribution of the LA in the RAM. In the present study it was possible to demonstrate which municipalities with the most development of realestate affected by LA (Funchal, Calheta and Santa Cruz). It was also possible to verify that in all municipalities there are properties related to this activity, presenting different typologies in more central areas (predominance of apartments) and less centralized areas (predominance of dwellings). The results showed that 62% of the investors are trained at higher level and in a general perspective the respondents have the competencies to act in the market.

In the European Union (EU) there are nine outermost regions (ORs), among which are the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). The ORs have several specificities that limit their economic and social development, but their strategic importance is significant compared to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), so it is important to know. The aim of this paper is to deepen the knowledge and describe the evolution of the business sector in the ARA and ARM. Through a descriptive study using secondary data published by the Serviço Regional de Estatística dos Açores [the Azores Regional Statistics Service], Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira [Madeira Regional Directorate of Statistics] and Instituto Nacional de Estatística [the National Statistical Institute], it was possible to verify that in the ARA and ARM between 2008 and 2017 there was initially a regression in the number of companies and a later recovery until 2017. In the ARA the total number of companies in 2017 still does not equal the number of 2008. In addition, in both regions, the total number of small, medium and large companies in 2017 still do not add up to the figures for 2008. As for the legal form, in the ARA individual companies show a decrease in their expression, while in the ARM the trend is reversed. Regarding the sectors of economic activity, there were some variations over this period, in both regions, namely the construction sector has been decreasing its expression and the accommodation, catering and similar sector has increased its expression in relation to the overall number of companies evidencing a paradigm shift.

The suspension of on-site (teaching and non-teaching) activities in Higher Education disrupted the development of the school year in most Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), with a strong impact on the academic community. This paper presents the results of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages, located on the island of Madeira, Portugal. With the aim of assessing the effect of the pandemic on the academic pathway, an analysis of the decisions taken amid the pandemic, as well as the strategies adopted to mitigate the situation, was developed. For this purpose, in terms of methodology, questionnaires were addressed to the academic population, between March and April 2020. The perspectives of teachers, students, and non-teaching staff were analyzed regarding the effects of this situation on the education path and the strategies developed and measures implemented. This is a descriptive, exploratory study. Data werecollected by direct contact with the HEI’s leaders, and the questionnaire was conducted online through anon-probabilityconvenience sample. It was found that most students only used the internet for communication or research and had never joined an online training course. The chosen platform proved to be appropriate to the needs, resulting in satisfaction. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the measures taken were appropriate to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on the students’ teaching, learning, and assessment process, and to ensure continuity and development of teaching and research activities. Communication was effective.

Contemporary tourism is facing profound structural transformations driven by digitalization, the growing centrality of data, and the need for more sustainable and inclusive development models. In this context, this special issue of the Journal of Economics, Companies and Entrepreneurs in the CPLP (E3) brings together a set of studies selected from ICOTTS'23 – 5th International Conference on Tourism Technology & Systems, reflecting the multidisciplinary and transversal nature of this field of research. The included works address fundamental topics such as tourist behavior in digital environments, the integration of smart technologies in destinations, marketing and competitiveness strategies, as well as the dynamics of sustainability and territorial development. Recent literature shows that digital technologies, including intelligent systems, big data and digital platforms, play a decisive role in transforming the tourism experience, optimizing destination management and creating value for different stakeholders. At the same time, the importance of sustainability as a structuring axis of tourism development is reinforced, promoting a balanced articulation between economic growth, social inclusion and environmental preservation. The integrated analysis of these themes highlights the need for interdisciplinary and data-driven approaches, capable of responding to the complexity of contemporary tourism systems. This special issue thus contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge by highlighting the interconnections between technology, innovation and territorial development, offering relevant perspectives for researchers, decision-makers and professionals in the sector.

The Electronic Health Record (EHR) is the result of a transformation in the current healthcare system, influenced by innovation, integration, and sharing of clinical data. The EHR should include a clinical summary of patients, electronic prescriptions, electronic medication dispensing records, laboratory results, medical images and/or reports, and hospital discharge notes. Prescription errors and therapeutic administration are among the most common avoidable errors in healthcare, ranking as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and a priority for the World Health Organization since the launch of the “Medication Without Harm” initiative. The objectives of this study are: i) to present a digital therapeutic reconciliation model; ii) to propose an interoperable and legally compliant solution; iii) to integrate Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence technologies into the presented model. Through a descriptive and exploratory literature review, the use of HL7 FHIR and SNOMED-CT standards, a client-CA model for Blockchain, and machine learning and natural language processing models for Artificial Intelligence were proposed. Ensuring the interoperable and secure transmission of clinical data is complex but theoretically feasible. The advantages of therapeutic reconciliation will be measurable through the continuous reduction of morbidity and mortality associated with therapeutic errors.
