The use of sodic monensin and probiotics for controlling subacute ruminal acidosis in sheep

Parâmetros Metabólicos e Ruminais de Ovelhas Induzidas à Acidose Ruminal Sub-Clínica, Suplementadas com Probiótico, Monensina e Selênio Levedura
Publicationby Schwegler, ElizabethOrigin: OasisbrThe aim of this study was to observe the efficiency of probiotics, monensin and selenium yeast fed to sheep induced to sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) on the maintenance of normal ruminal and metabolic parameters. Thirty six sheep that averaged 12 months old and 31 ± 8 kg of body weight were used. The sheep were kept in a confinement system, receiving a diet based on tifton hay (Cynodon sp.) and concentrate. The sheep were divided in six groups, each one containing six animals. The treatments were: CO group, control, receiving the diet without any supplement; CS, with the addition of 1.5 g/animal/day of Sel-Plex® (selenium yeast); CM, with the addition of 11 ppm/kg of diet dry matter (DM) of monensin; CSM, with the addition of 11 ppm/kg of diet DM of monensin and 1.5 g/animal/day of Sel-Plex®; CY, with the addition of 3 g/animal/day of Yea-Sacc® (probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae); CSY, with the addition 3 g/animal/day of Yea-Sacc® and 1.5 g/animal/day of Sel-Plex®. The sheep receive this diet for 21 days before the start of the experiment. After the adaptation period the sheep were submitted to 2 days of fasting, receiving just the supplement and water ad libitum. After this, the sheep were submitted to 4 days of induced SARA, with concentrate ad libitum and received in the first morning meal the supplement specific for each group. Three days after the induction period, the sheep received the usual diet, but still receiving the supplements. Ruminal fluid collections were performed four times daily (8 and 12 AM and 4 and 7 PM) during the induction period and once daily (12 AM) in the recuperation period. The ruminal fluid was evaluated for pH, number of protozoa and chlorides concentration. Blood collection was performed once daily in the last day of adaptation, on the four days of induction and on the three days of recuperation. The metabolic parameters evaluated were: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma glutamil transferase (GGT), lactate desidrogenase (LDH), glucose, calcium, chlorides, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The results showed that control group was superior regarding ruminal pH (P<0.05). Ruminal chlorides and number of protozoa did not differ between groups (P>0.05), only between day of the experiment (P<0.05). Also, there was no difference in the blood metabolic parameters between groups (P>0.05), but only between day of the experiment (P<0.05). Thus, the supplements used in this experiment were not efficient in maintaining ruminal and metabolic parameters at physiological levels in sheep submitted to sub-acute ruminal acidosis. -

Publicationby Schwegler, ElizabethOrigin: OasisbrThe peripartum in dairy cows (three weeks before and three weeks after calving) is characterized by large changes in physiological demands in the animal where management practices, particularly nutrition, strongly influences the incidence of peripartum disorders and subsequent milk production. Most of the studies in that period in dairy cows are focused on confined systems where milk production is high. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess metabolic markers associated with the occurrence of clinical and subclinical mastitis and insulin resistance in dairy cows in semi extensive system. Our study was divided into two major experiments with the following hypothesis: 1) medium milk production primiparous cows in semi extensive system have predictive metabolic markers of clinical and subclinical mastitis in the prepartum, 2) medium milk production pluriparous dairy cows with low rate of glucose metabolism during the prepartum, which is an indicative of insulin resistance, have higher minerals excretion in the postpartum period. In experiment 1, blood concentrations of NEFA in the prepartum period were higher, in contrast, phosphorus and glucose were lower (P <0.05) in animals with clinical mastitis postpartum. In experiment 2, pluriparous dairy cows with low rate of glucose metabolism in the prepartum had higher urinary calcium excretion in both prepartum and postpartum periods, and also the highest NEFA concentration in the prepartum period (P <0.05). The blood concentrations of calcium in dairy cows with high rate of glucose metabolism in the postpartum was elevated from the prepartum period and remained in the postpartum (P <0.05). Dairy cows kept in semi extensive system with moderate production level had predictive markers of mastitis in the prepartum, as previously demonstrated by other authors in more intensified systems of higher requirements for the animal. The highlighted marker was NEFA, however, in the second study it was shown in higher concentrations in the pluriparous dairy cows with low rate of glucose metabolism at prepartum, emphasizing the importance of this marker also in the insulin resistance. -

Influence of monensin and yeast on rumination and metabolic parameters in semi-confined lamb - DOI: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v30i2.4687
Publicationby Tabeleão, Vinícius CoitinhoOther Authors: Del Pino, Francisco Augusto Burcket; Goulart, Maikel Alan; Schwegler, Elizabeth; Moura, Sandra VieiraOrigin: OasisbrThe aim of this study was to verify the influence of monensin and yeast supplements on rumination and metabolic parameters in semi-confined lamb. Thirty animals were divided into 3 groups: control (without supplement), ionophore (500 g t-1 of Rumensin®) and yeast (500 g t-1 of Beefsac®), were used. These animals were kept in semi-confinement, receiving the feed equivalent to 2% of their live weight. Samples of the ruminal fluid were collected every 7 days, in order to determine the pH, redox potential, time of sedimentation and fluctuation, color, odor, consistency and protozoa movement. The same interval was used for blood sampling collection. The concentrations of glucose, urea, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, albumin, oxaloacetic transaminase and γ-glutaril-transferase were determined. The yeast group presented lower values (p < 0.05) for ruminal pH in relation to the control group. Regarding other ruminal parameter evaluations, no supplement effect was verified (p > 0.05). In relation to metabolic parameters, differences (p > 0.05) in concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, albumin and oxaloacetic transaminase were not observed. However, urea, triacylglycerol and γ-glutaril-transferase were higher (p < 0.05) in the yeast group. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of supplements does not alter ruminal parameters in relation to physiological patterns. -

No entanto, todas as dietas apresentaram margem líquida e resultado econômico negativos. -

Salmonella enterica and enterobacteria in pig carcasses processed on different slaughter days
Publicationby Rizzotto,DouglasOther Authors: Montes,Julia Helena; Kich,Jalusa Deon; Peripolli,Vanessa; Bianchi,Ivan; Oliveira Júnior,Juahil Martins de et al.Origin: OasisbrAbstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the contamination by Salmonella sp. and enterobacteria in pig carcasses from the first and last batches slaughtered in a same week, at different stages of the slaughtering line. Samples were collected from the first and last batches slaughtered on Monday and Friday of each week, respectively, during five weeks, totaling ten batches. From each batch, ten carcasses were collected in eight stages of the slaughter line: bleeding, scalding, singeing/evisceration, inspection, spinal cord removal, final washing, blast chilling, and after cooling. A total of 800 samples were analyzed for Salmonella sp. and enterobacteria quantification. The last batch of the week showed twice the chances of the pig carcasses being contaminated with Salmonella sp. and, consequently, a greater amount of enterobacteria (1.00 log10 CFU per square centimeter) than the first batch (0.88 log10 CFC per square centimeter). A higher count of enterobacteria was also observed in the stages of bleeding (2.37 log10 CFU per square centimeter) and scalding (2.36 log10 CFU per square centimeter). The last batches slaughtered in the week show a greater contamination than the first ones, and there is a greater contamination of carcasses by Salmonella sp. and enterobacteria in the initial stages of pig slaughter, i.e., at bleeding and scalding. -

Evaluation of the metabolic profile of bulls in different phases of the reproductive cycle
Publicationby Vieira, Marcelo BrandiOther Authors: Schwegler, Elizabeth; Goulart, Maikel Alan; da Silva, Viviane Maciel; Leston, Jacques; Tabeleão, Vinícius Coitinho et al.Origin: OasisbrBulls are an important category in cattle production systems, being responsible for a considerable part of genetic improvement in a herd. However, few studies about the metabolic conditions of this category have been done. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile of bulls in three different phases of the reproductive cycle, that are, before, during and after the breeding season. This study was conducted with 23 bulls, in a farm in southern Rio Grande do Sul. The biochemical markers used for the evaluations were: glicose and cholesterol, to determine energetic profile; albumin and urea to determine protein profile and enzyme aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as an indicator of liver functionality. There was a difference (p < 0,05) in all metabolic markers evaluated during the different phases of the productive cycle, showing that there was a variation in food availability, which could lead to productive and reproductive losses. This could be improved by protein supplementation and pasture improvement. -

Metabolic parameters of ewes receiving diets containing aflatoxin and zearalenone with addition of modified glucomannan
