Other Authors: Matos, N. F.; Santos Coelho, Rosa
----The need for increased production and use of consumer goods due to population growth and economic development and the need to give an appropriate final destination to effluents and solid waste, determine significant pressures on the environment. One answer that has been found by civil society to minimize these problems lies in the definition and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS). The EMS implementation at the level of companies and institutions, allows to frame environmental problems and contributes to their solutions, reinforcing a positive image and promoting the increase of their environmental competitiveness. The developed work within the discipline of Environmental Engineering Project of the Agricultural School of Santarém (ESAS) is intended to show the advantages by a Environmental Management System (EMS) implemented at the level of education institutions like ESAS, as well as the difficulties associated with its implementation. The application of this model to ESAS can show all gains that may have an EMS in school in terms of the benefits in reducing resource use and associated monetary costs and on the improved image that is transmitted to the surrounding community. This way ESAS can combine their ancestral tradition with sustainability in the management of resources for future generations.

Background and aims: Dysphagic patients who underwent endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) usually present protein-energy malnutrition, but little is known about micronutrient malnutrition. The aim of the present study was the evaluation of serum zinc in patients who underwent endoscopic gastrostomy and its relationship with serum proteins, whole blood zinc, and the nature of underlying disorder. Methods: From patients that underwent gastrostomy a blood sample was obtained minutes before the procedure. Serum and whole blood zinc was evaluated using Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy. Serum albumin and transferrin were evaluated. Patients were studied as a whole and divided into two groups: head and neck cancer (HNC) and neurological dysphagia (ND). Results: The study involved 32 patients (22 males), aged 43-88 years: HNC = 15, ND = 17. Most (30/32) had low serum zinc, 17/32 presented normal values of whole blood zinc. Only two, with traumatic brain injury, presented normal serum zinc. Serum zinc levels showed no differences between HNC and ND patients. There was no association between serum zinc and serum albumin or transferrin. There was no association between serum and whole blood zinc. Conclusions: Patients had low serum zinc when gastrostomy was performed, similar in HNC and ND, being related with prolonged fasting and unrelated with the underlying disease. Decrease serum zinc was unrelated with low serum proteins. Serum zinc was more sensitive than whole blood zinc for identifying reduced zinc intake. Teams taking care of PEG-patients should include zinc evaluation as part of the nutritional assessment, or include systematic dietary zinc supply.

Dipeptide esters of paracetamol were prepared in high yields. These compounds are quantitatively hydrolyzed to paracetamol and corresponding 2,5-diketopiperazines at pH 7.4 and 37 ° C. The reactivity is increased in sarcosine and proline peptides and decreased by bulky side chains at both the N- and C-terminal residues of the dipeptide carrier. Moreover, dipeptide esters of paracetamol did not affect the levels of hepatic glutathione. Thus, dipeptides seem promising candidates as carriers for cyclization-activated prodrugs. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Deciduoid Pleural Mesothelioma - a Rare Entity in a Young Woman

    Publication
    by Santos, C
    Other Authors: Gamboa, F; Fradinho, F; Pêgo, A; Carvalho, L; Bernardo, J
Deciduoid Mesothelioma is a rare variant of epithelioid mesothelioma; it was initially thought that it only occurred in the peritoneum of young women and had nothing to do with asbestos exposure. However, since these early findings it has also been observed in the pleura and the pericardium, with possible association to asbestos. In general the prognosis is poor compared to epithelioid mesothelioma. 45 cases have been reported in the literature up to now, 22 of these were located in the pleural cavity. The authors describe a case of deciduoid pleural mesothelioma in a 40-year-old-woman who presented with right pleuritic chest pain, with no history of asbestos exposure, treated with chemotherapy followed by surgery and who died postoperatively.

    Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia

    Publication
    by Santos, C
    Other Authors: Fradinho, F; Catarin0, A
The histologic pattern of Acute Fibrinous and Organizing Pneumonia (AFOP), described by Beasley in 2002, is characterized by the existence of intra alveolar fibrin in the form of fibrin "balls" and diffuse organizing pneumonia. Presenting symptoms of this interstitial pulmonary disease can be acute or subacute. However, it differs from the well -recognized histologic patterns of acute pulmonary lesion - Diffuse Alveolar Damage (DAD), Organizing Pneumonia (OP) and Eosinophilic Pneumonia (EP). The authors carry out a review of the literature concerning this topic and describe the clinical case of a 44 -year -old patient with unusual imaging features and outcome
