Inverted-L Antenna (ILA) Design Using Fractal for WLAN USB Dongle

    Publication
    by Luo, Qi
Other Authors: Pereira, J.R.; Salgado, H.M.
This work presents an Inverted-L antenna design using the fractal geometry for dual band WLAN (2.4/5.2GHz) USB dongle application. The proposed antenna has the advantages of compact size, wide operation bandwidth and easy fabrication. The experimental results show that it has a S11<-10 dB bandwidth from 2.25 to 2.60 GHz and 5.06 to 5.62 GHz. The radiation performances of the proposed antenna in free space and when connected to a laptop computer were also studied in this work. The proposed antenna was designed and optimized by using Ansoft HFSS V13.

Analysis of Resonant Tunnelling Diode Oscillators under Optical Modulation

    Publication

Other Authors: Pessoa, L. M.; Figueiredo, José; Salgado, H. M.
In this paper, we investigate the optical modulation characteristics of a resonant tunnelling diode (RTD) oscillator. This preliminary work on the first RTD-PD oscillators with an optical window available from the iBROW project demonstrate that this device can effectively be used to accomplish amplitude and frequency modulation with light injection.

Scalable high-gaussicity split-block diagonal horn antenna for integration with Sub-THz devices

    Publication

In this paper we propose a high-gaussicity spline-profiled horn antenna, which is scalable in length and aperture to achieve higher gains whilst retaining a high Gaussian efficiency. A novel approach is used where a PSO is used for optimizing the spline, using the gaussicities at the operating frequencies as the objective function, which further improves side-lobe level and cross-polarization when compared to the state-of-the-art. With the proposed method, which was validated through FEM simulations in HFSS, reflection coefficients below -15 dB, gains greater than 25 dBi and gaussicities above 91% were obtained in the entire WR-3 band.

Wireless interrogation of an optically modulated resonant tunnelling diode oscillator

    Publication
    by Cantu, Horacio I.

In this work, a resonant tunnelling diode-photo-detector based microwave oscillator is amplitude modulated using an optical signal. The modulated free running oscillator is coupled to an antenna and phase locked by a wireless carrier that allows remote extraction of the information contained in the modulation. An off-the-shelf demodulator has been used to recover the envelope of the baseband data originally contained in the optical signal. Data were successfully transmitted at a rate of 1 MSym/s with a bit error rate below 10-6. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:1728-1730, 2013

Rayleigh Assisted Brillouin Effects In Distributed Raman Amplifiers Under Saturated Conditions At 40 Gb/S

    Publication
    by Rocco Giraldi, M. T. M.

This article analyzes experimentally the limitations observed in lightwave systems using distributed Raman amplifiers operating under large pump power input conditions. The Brillouin effect is observed as the pump power reaches 1 W. The presence of Brillouin peaks degrades the performance of the system. The Raman amplification occurs in single mode and dispersion compensating fibers, being evaluated in a link at transmission rate of 40 Gb/s. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
