Peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) and mammee apple (Mammea americana L.) are fruits found in Latin America, North of South America (Amazonia) and Western India, traditionally consumed with the disposal of the seeds. These materials presented high caloric value, essential amino acids, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, absence of anti-nutritional compounds, and low concentration of phytates and tannins. The morphological characteristics indicated the presence of starch granules in the mammee apple seeds, which contain 21% of this polysaccharide. The oil from peach palm seeds is rich in lauric acid (49.82%) and myristic acid (21.53%) and the seeds may contain galactomannans in their structure (mannose/glucose 4:1). The mammee apple seed oil showed palmitic acid (30.75%), oleic acid (36.12%), and linoleic acid (25.89%). The characteristics of these seeds justify their application, converting residues into new materials with possible application in the food industry and other industrial sectors.

Granuloma Glutaeale Infantum: A Re-emerging Complication of Diaper Dermatitis

    Publication
    by Ramos Pinheiro, R
    Other Authors: Matos-Pires, E; Baptista, J; Lencastre, A
Granuloma gluteale infantum is a rare nodular complication of irritant diaper dermatitis. The association of this condition with the widespread use of nondisposable cloth diapers has been increasingly recognized. We present the case of an 18-month-old girl with granuloma gluteale infantum. Our aims are to emphasize the importance of clinical recognition of this re-emerging complication of diaper dermatitis and to point out the potential role of topical calcineurin inhibitors as a treatment option.

Minimally Invasive Repair of Morgagni Hernia - A Multicenter Case Series

    Publication
    by Lamas-Pinheiro, R

Children may benefit from minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in the correction of Morgagni hernia (MH). The present study aims to evaluate the outcome of MIS through a multicenter study. National institutions that use MIS in the treatment of MH were included. Demographic, clinical and operative data were analyzed. Thirteen patients with MH (6 males) were operated using similar MIS technique (percutaneous stitches) at a mean age of 22.2±18.3 months. Six patients had chromosomopathies (46%), five with Down syndrome (39%). Respiratory complaints were the most common presentation (54%). Surgery lasted 95±23min. In none of the patients was the hernia sac removed; prosthesis was never used. In the immediate post-operative period, 4 patients (36%) were admitted to intensive care unit (all with Down syndrome); all patients started enteral feeds within the first 24h. With a mean follow-up of 56±16.6 months, there were two recurrences (18%) at the same institution, one of which was repaired with an absorbable suture; both with Down syndrome. The application of MIS in the MH repair is effective even in the presence of comorbidities such as Down syndrome; the latter influences the immediate postoperative recovery and possibly the recurrence rate. Removal of hernia sac does not seem necessary. Non-absorbable sutures may be more appropriate.

A Comparative Study of Onychomycosis and Traumatic Toenail Onychodystrophy Dermoscopic Patterns

Background: Onychomycosis (OM) and traumatic onychodystrophy (OD) are common causes of toenail changes. A clinical diagnosis is often impossible without mycology. Dermoscopy is helpful in this setting but yet underexplored. Prospective comparative studies between OM and OD onychoscopic findings have not been previously performed. Objectives: We sought to determine distinguishing dermoscopic presentations of OM and traumatic OD. Methods: We performed a prospective, observational study including patients presenting with ≥1 toenail onychodystrophy. All underwent onychoscopy, clinical and mycological examination. Based on these results, patients received a final diagnosis of OM or OD. Dermoscopic presentations of OM and OD patients were classified in patterns and compared. Results: In all, 110 cases of OM and 82 of traumatic OD were compared. Statistical analyses revealed that the distal pulverized and the irregular spiked macular dermoscopic patterns were predictors of an OM diagnosis. The regular macular, the non-classifiable, the total and partial homogeneous background dermoscopic patterns correlated with traumatic OD diagnosis. Conclusions: We demonstrated that OM and traumatic OD have distinctive onychoscopic presentations. Dermoscopy may be an important ancillary tool to guide their differential.
