Composite electrodes based on several ceramic oxides were tested for their chemical compatibility and electrochemical performance in systems based on composite Gd-doped ceria + alkaline carbonate electrolytes. Reactivity tests performed at 700 degrees C (accelerated testing conditions), involving the ceramic electrode materials and one mixture of Na and Li carbonates, identified two promising perovskyte-type ceramics, LaCoO3 and La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3, as the most stable. Co-pressed and co-sintered cell assemblies (electrode/electrolyte/electrode) involving composite electrodes (perovskytes mixed with alkaline carbonates)were studied in detail by scanning electron microscopy and tested by impedance spectroscopy in air in the temperature range 300-600 degrees C. These tests showed the potential of these composite electrodes for intermediate temperature applications, clearly surpassing in performance standard Au electrodes, here used as reference. The aim of this work was to evaluate the growth of sesame BRS 196 CNPA G4 in different irrigation depths (305, 436, 567 and 698 mm), applied on the basis of crop evapotranspiration? ETc (the depth of 567 mm was equal to 100% ETc). It was conducted at Embrapa Cotton, in Barbalha County, Ceará State, Brazil, 2012. The experiment was in randomized blocks, with treatments distributed in plots with three replications. The ETc was calculated by multiplying the reference evapotranspiration (ETo), determined by the Penman-Monteith method, by the crop coefficients (Kc), recommended for each phenological stage of the crop and by FAO. For the other irrigation treatments, the ETc was multiplied by 0.4, 0.7 and 1.3 (40, 70 and 130% of ETc). Primarily, height, stem diameter, leaf area and leaf area index were measured at 27, 48, 69 and 90 Days After Emergence (DAE), and then the absolute and relative growth rates in height, stem diameter and leaf area were estimated. It was concluded that height, stem diameter, leaf area and leaf area index of sesame BRS 196 CNPA G4 increased with irrigation; the highest growth occurred until 70 or 75 DAE, and the greatest growth was obtained, in general, in 698 mm of irrigation depth. Key words: Sesamum indicum L., evapotranspiration, growth rates, water stress.

Consumer exposure to phthalates from paper packaging: an integrated approach

    Publicação

Outros Autores: Oliveira, J.C.; Pereira, J.R; Hogg, T.
This paper presents an integrated approach to estimate the exposure of the Portuguese population to phthalates as a contaminant originating from paperboard packaging. The approach combined data of migrant concentration in the foods resulting from a stochastic simulation with consumption data of food packaged in paperboard. The results from the exposure model were validated with experimental values actually found in the food. A short surveillance exercise was conducted with samples collection from market shelves to identify and quantify the phthalates present in both the packages and the food. The distribution of values for the di-butyl phthalate concentration in the packages was used as the input of the initial concentration in the Weibull model to estimate the concentration of this phthalate in the foods. This distribution of occurrence data was then combined with the packaging usage data in a probabilistic simulation with a Monte Carlo sampling method. Exposure values ranged between zero and 8.95 mg day 1 kgbw, a value close to the tolerable daily intake established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) – 10 mg day 1 kgbw. However, the 97.5th percentile and the average were 1.82 and 0.44 day 1 kgbw, respectively, indicating that further refinement of the estimates is not necessary. Other phthalates were also detected in the packaging samples: di-isobutyl phthalate and di-ethylhexyl phthalate. The latter was present in all packaging samples collected and was detected in a few food samples at values requiring further investigation.
