A description of Enhanced UMTS (E-UMTS) characterisation parameters is presented, and a first assignment of parameter values for these services is proposed. Different points of view are compared for the classification of the mixture of applications, namely ITU-T I.211, UMTS Forum and 3GPP ones. Characterisation parameters includes among others data rate, tolerance to delay and error, busy hour call attempt and session duration.

Different points of view are compared for the classification of Enhanced UMTS (E-UMTS) applications, namely ITU-T I.211, UMTS Forum and 3GPP ones. A set of characterisation parameters (e.g. data rate, tolerance to delay and error, and session duration) is described, and a first assignment of parameter values for these services is proposed. An overview of E-UMTS deployment scenarios and supported services is then presented, based on the views of nowadays-relevant players. The influence of mobility in E-UMTS is discussed, and mobility models and scenarios are given. Deployment and mobility scenarios include expected population density, mobility characteristics, and usage of service mix, for each environment. A total of nearly thirty applications are considered. However, a reduced set of applications is needed for simulations purposes, and scenarios were defined with a selection of the most relevant applications. Finally, E-UMTS traffic generation and activity models, based on population and service penetration values, are described and characterised. ON/OFF states have been characterised by appropriate statistical distributions and parameters.

It is shown that enhanced UMTS is an affordable solution for providing the required network quality and to reduce infrastructure investments in offices scenarios. System capacity results are obtained by using a system level simulator which considers traffic characterisation parameters and services usage in detail, among other. Results for the most profitable cell radius are obtained via an optimisation procedure based in economic aspects. A higher number of pico cells (with a smaller radius, around 30-32 m) can be installed in the future, when costs of deploying and maintaining the network decreases, allowing for supporting higher system capacity, and reducing prices. Our approach is based in a detailed services analysis, which represents a worst case situation relatively to the total services approach, because the later does not discriminate results for the different traffic classes. The impact of call blocking, handover failure, end-to-end delay, and delay variation are taken into account.

This paper presents a new planning tool that facilitates the design and implementation of a WLAN (wireless local area network) which not only provides an accurate solution, but it also gives practical and useful information for the professional planner towards a quick implementation, such as the number and position of the access points (AP) or an estimation of the total cost of implementation based on data provided by different equipment manufacturers. The novelty of this tool is a new algorithm for calculating the best position of each AP was used, which is based on the user’s applications and their most probable positions. This tool is user friendly and it interactively helps WLAN designers to properly define all the necessary equipment so as to provide a given coverage, i.e. with a given quality of service, for a given floor plant without to make a site survey in the places where this networks will be implemented.

Enhanced UMTS traffic generation and activity models are described and characterised, based on population and service penetration values. As a reduced set of scenarios is needed for simulation purposes, scenarios were defined with a selection of the most relevant applications. ON/OFF states have been characterised by appropriate statistical distributions for long-range dependence, and parameters for source traffic modelling have been presented.

In this paper an all-IP Enhanced-Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (E-UMTS) is considered, where enhancements include link level behavior, high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel, resource management, Diffserv architecture, and Radio Resource Management schemes. An overview of E-UMTS deployment scenarios and service needs is presented based on the views of relevant players. Deployment and mobility scenarios are considered, including expected population density and usage of service mix for three environments, namely offices, urban/vehicular, and business city center. In addition, based on population and service penetration values, E-UMTS traffic generation and activity models are described and characterized. Based on these scenarios and characterizations, system level simulations are carried out and the enhanced service quality performance is demonstrated, including blocking probability, handover failure probability and end-to-enddelay in each deployment scenario. By using system level simulations, services and environmental conditions can be mapped into deployment strategies (and supported system capacity) whose evaluation is essential prior to field trials and real implementation. On the one hand, costs depend on the prices of the spectrum, equipment, operation and maintenance, as well as on the number of cells which, in turn, depends on the cell radius. On the other, revenues depend on the price per MB and on the supported throughput. As the goal of operators and service providers is to maximize the profit, the profit in percentage was obtained for the three considered scenarios. Its optimum values are found for cell radii around 31, 257, and 310 m for offices, vehicular and business city center scenarios, respectively.

By considering the deployment scenarios and teletraffic parameters from the Vehicular scenario of SEACORN, a simulator was produced to extract conclusions about blocking and handover failure probabilities in Enhanced UMTS. Simulations, which consider the burstiness of traffic, were performed for different cases, from single- to multi-service situations, and from absence to presence of mobility. The simulator allows for extracting conclusions about the validation of the Bernoulli-Poisson-Pascal model for the computation of the ON/OFF blocking probability, the ratio between the number of call rejected at the beginning of an ON period and the total number of bursts generated during a session. As the theoretical and the simulation results agree, the validation was achieved, and there is an almost perfect concordance between theoretical and simulation values when the average sojourn time in cells is equal to the average holding time. In the multi-service case, the behaviour is not exactly the same but a coherent trend is achieved.

Based in a definition of simulations scenarios, traffic behaviour, and QoS (Quality of Service) aspects, a SLS (System Level Simulator) is used for obtaining system capacity results for urban scenarios, when overload conditions are considered. Optimum values of the cell coverage distance that maximise the profit by unit area were found. For prices of 5 and 7 Euro cents/MB, optimum values of 70 % and 140 %, respectively, were found for profit (for a coverage distance of ~414 m).
