Aluísio de Azevedo and Japan: a critical appreciation

    Publication
    by Ortiz, Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr
The article analyses the book Japan by Aluísio de Azevedo, who was Brazil’s vice-consul in Yokohama, between 1887 and 1889. It tries to insert the author’s opinions and the fascination he seems to have for the Emperor in the complex context of japonization-process which ran throughout Japan at the end of the 80ies of the last century. Talking into account that the country of that time is immersed in a debate which opposes modernization to tradition inside the parameters of an exalted nationalism, the aim here is to investigate the fundaments of a perspective suggested by an author characterized by his brasility and by an idyllic perception of Japanese isolationism, a measure of purity in relation to Europe. The analysis emphasizes the oscillation between a look which tends to see the Orient as a homogeneous block contrasting with the Occident as well as the national question, which precisely is the assertion of a specificity.

Walter Benjamin e Paris: individualidade e trabalho intelectual

    Publication
    by Ortiz, Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr

    The social sciences and culture

    Publication
    by Ortiz, Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr
This article analyses the historical constitution of culture as object in social sciences, in terms of popular culture, national culture and mass culture. It compares the processes of institutionalisation of sociology according to the different national and regional contexts and it looks at how this subject of study becomes autonomous through task specialization when competing with other disciplines. The regaining of the interpretative unit and a conceptual review for the study of 'global objects' are defined as the main challenges for sociology nowadays.

    Estudos culturais

    Publication
    by Ortiz, Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr

    Culture and contemporary world

    Publication
    by Ortiz, Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr
In view of contemporary relevance obtained by culture and its derivatives, by combining history of concepts with ethnography of ideas, an overview of the semantic changes in the notion of culture is drawn. However, in doing so, it is not the purpose to make an exhaustive inventory of this wide semantic framework. With the support of the categories of “constellation of meanings” and of “geological strata”, three distinct layers that ad up to the understanding of the idea of culture are differentiated and analyzed: “culto, cultivado, arte”, “culture as a whole” (nation and anthropological studies) and “mass culture”. Although bearing in mind the existing gap between the three constellations, regarding the novelty that they engender in the problem of culture, they are not taken as isolated from each other, it is chosen to observe how they intertwine and, in particular, how they become mutual references.

    Imagens do Brasil

    Publication
    by Ortiz,Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr

    Publication
    by Ortiz,Renato
    Origin: Oasisbr
