Use of a new antimicrobial consumption monitoring system (Vet-AMNet): Application to Dutch dairy sector over a 9-year period
Publicationby Moura, POther Authors: Sanders, P; Heederik, D; Van Geijlswijk, IM; Niza-Ribeiro, JIntroduction: The urgency of preventing the increase of antimicrobial resistance has been emphasized by international authorities such as the World Health Organization, European Medicines Agency, and World Organization for Animal Health. Monitoring systems capable of reporting antimicrobial consumption data are regarded as a crucial pillar of this fight. The Vet-AMNet system was developed to collect and analyze national antimicrobial consumption data in Portuguese dairy farms to support the veterinary authority in stewardship actions and to assist both veterinarians and farmers in daily decisions related to antimicrobials. Methods: To evaluate the robustness of the system and other identified critical success factors, it was used to analyze antimicrobial consumption data available from the Dutch dairy cow sector over the period from 2012 to 2020. The data previously used for publications by the Netherlands Veterinary Medicines Institute (SDa) were imported and pre-processed by the Vet-AMNet system according to the SDa's standard operating procedure and the Dutch metrics to measure antimicrobial consumption were calculated. Results: By comparing the outputs with the figures generated by the system established in the Netherlands, the Portuguese system was validated. Antimicrobial consumption data from the Dutch dairy sector during the 9-year period will be presented in unpublished graphs and tables, where each molecule's pharmaceutical formulation, pharmacotherapeutic group and line of choice will be related and discussed, illustrating the evolution of sectorial antimicrobial consumption against a background of a strong national antimicrobial policy initiated by public-private cooperation and supported by legislation. Characterisation of antimicrobial usage in Danish pigs in 2020
Publicationby Moura, POther Authors: Sandberg, M; Hog, BB; Niza-Ribeiro, J; Nielsen, EO; Alban, LIntroductionDenmark is one of the world's largest exporters of pigs and pig meat, so the sector plays an important role in the national antimicrobial use (AMU). The Danish government has run antimicrobial stewardship programs in collaboration with the pig industry for more than 25 years. These have resulted in substantial overall reductions in total AMU and limiting the use of fluoroquinolones, the 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporines and the polymyxin colistin. To understand where further reductions in AMU could take place, it is necessary to investigate which antimicrobials are being used, how, and for which reasons. Materials and methodsWe characterized the AMU in the Danish pig sector in 2020, providing new analytical insights based on data retrieved from the VetStat database. The AMU data were segmented into classes, routes of administration, treatment indications and age groups, and interpreted as an outcome of the interventions taken. We evaluated the current AMU regarding choice of antimicrobial class. Moreover, we discussed how to further improve the antimicrobial stewardship in Danish pig production to achieve additional reductions without jeopardizing animal welfare. Where relevant, two pig veterinary specialists were consulted. ResultsIn 2020, 43.3 mg antimicrobials per population correction unit (PCU) were ascribed to the Danish pig sector. There was practically no use of fluoroquinolones, 3(rd) and 4(th) generation cephalosporins and polymyxins. Weaners related to 45% of the total AMU in pigs when measured in tonnes and 81% when measured in defined animal daily doses, of these 76% were ascribed to gastrointestinal indications and overall, 83% were administered perorally. ConclusionTo enable further reductions in AMU, it should be investigated how and when to replace group treatments (e.g., all animals in section or a pen) with individual treatments. Moreover, prevention of disease and promotion of animal health should be prioritized, e.g., through focus on feed, vaccination, biosecurity, and disease eradication. -

Long-term social recognition memory in adult male rats: factor analysis of the social and non-social behaviors
Publicationby Moura,P.J.Other Authors: Meirelles,S.T.; Xavier,G.F.Origin: OasisbrA modified version of the intruder-resident paradigm was used to investigate if social recognition memory lasts at least 24 h. One hundred and forty-six adult male Wistar rats were used. Independent groups of rats were exposed to an intruder for 0.083, 0.5, 2, 24, or 168 h and tested 24 h after the first encounter with the familiar or a different conspecific. Factor analysis was employed to identify associations between behaviors and treatments. Resident rats exhibited a 24-h social recognition memory, as indicated by a 3- to 5-fold decrease in social behaviors in the second encounter with the same conspecific compared to those observed for a different conspecific, when the duration of the first encounter was 2 h or longer. It was possible to distinguish between two different categories of social behaviors and their expression depended on the duration of the first encounter. Sniffing the anogenital area (49.9% of the social behaviors), sniffing the body (17.9%), sniffing the head (3%), and following the conspecific (3.1%), exhibited mostly by resident rats, characterized social investigation and revealed long-term social recognition memory. However, dominance (23.8%) and mild aggression (2.3%), exhibited by both resident and intruders, characterized social agonistic behaviors and were not affected by memory. Differently, sniffing the environment (76.8% of the non-social behaviors) and rearing (14.3%), both exhibited mostly by adult intruder rats, characterized non-social behaviors. Together, these results show that social recognition memory in rats may last at least 24 h after a 2-h or longer exposure to the conspecific. -

Supercritical fluid extraction from guava (Psidium guajava) leaves: global yield, composition and kinetic data
Publicationby Moura, P. M.Other Authors: Prado, Glaucia Helena Carvalho do; Meireles, Maria Angela de Almeida; Courtial, Camila Gambini PereiraOrigin: OasisbrThe aim of this work was to obtain guava leaf extracts using supercritical fluid extraction. The use of ethanol and isopropyl alcohol as co-solvents was evaluated. In addition, mass transfer kinetics experiments were carried out and overall extraction curves were modeled. The global yield and extract composition from supercritical fluid extraction were compared with those from conventional extractions. The extracts were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results indicated the presence of essential oils, flavonoids and anti-oxidant compounds in all extracts. The highest global yield was observed with the Soxhlet extraction process. However, the extracts from supercritical fluid extraction had higher levels of functional compounds. Overall, the Sovová model best described the overall extraction curves -

Obstetric litigation: the importance of the quality of clinical files and its influence on expertise conclusions
Publicationby Domingues, APOther Authors: Moura, P; Vieira, DNTo appreciate the Portuguese circumstances concerning situations of obstetric medico-legal conflicts and to evaluate the influence of the quality of files in expert conclusions, an analysis of all cases of obstetric medical responsibility from 2001-11 was carried out. File quality was evaluated by absence or insufficiency of clinical information supplied, by poor quality of document copies and by the registered incongruities among all the health professionals involved. Clinical files sent for forensic analysis were defective in most cases (89.5%). In about 11% of cases, expert opinion was inconclusive as a result of the poor quality of the clinical files sent for technical and scientific analysis. This situation is particularly serious in cases where the reason for the dispute was asphyxia, traumatic lesions of the newborn following instrumented delivery or shoulder dystocia and maternal sequelae, where the lack or absence of information, and poor quality copies were significantly associated with inconclusive opinions. -

Twins prematurity--the influence of prenatal surveillance
Publicationby Domingues, APOther Authors: Fonseca, E; Belo, A; Moura, POBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the local prenatal surveillance of twin pregnancies in the obstetrical results. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of multiple pregnancies delivered over a period of 16 years in a tertiary centre was conducted. In this study 861 twin pregnancies were included. They were compared for obstetric complications, gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery and birthweight, according to the place of the surveillance. RESULTS: Of the 861 cases examined, the following obstetric complications were significantly different: metrorrhagia (p = 0.039), infections (p < 0.001), HELLP (p = 0.007), PROMPT (p < 0.001) and fetal death (p = 0.024). The mode of delivery was similar but occurred mostly ≤32 weeks (p < 0.001), the birthweight was mostly <2000 g and occurred more NICU admission (p < 0.001) when surveillance was outside the MPC-MDM. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate the crucial importance of prenatal surveillance be carried in a differentiated referral centers with specific/strict protocols or the urgent implementation of same protocols in all other places of surveillance, since this straight surveillance greatly reduces the occurrence of prenatal complications, mainly PROMPT, PTD. -

Avaliação da sensibilidade médica para o risco de gravidez não planeada
Publicationby Nobre-Ramos, VOther Authors: Rodrigues, A; Sousa, S; Bombas, T; Moura, PABSTRACT: In Portugal, about 94% of sexually active women who don`t want to become pregnant, use a contraceptive method. From these, oral hormonal contraceptives are the most used. Despite this, unplanned pregnancies are a reality. The current study aimed to evaluate physicians’ sensibility to contraceptive counselling on the introduction of new therapies in women with underlying medical conditions and in polymedicated ones. It was a survey study with ten closed-ended questions. Physicians who care for women of reproductive age in a tertiary referral centre (n= 181). It was conducted an opinion survey among physicians who care for women of childbearing age. The differences in medical opinion considering age, sex, medical / surgical specialties and years of clinical practice were analyzed. In the introduction of new therapies, asked about the contraceptive method in use: always 16,6% (n=30) of respondents, nearly always 28,7% (n=52) and sometimes 44,8% (n=81). From these, 62% (n=101) neither provided complete information nor remitted to family planning appointments. When pregnancy was contraindicated 38,7% (n=70) informed about a safe method. About 89,5% (n=162) of the respondents didn't attended updates on contraception in the last year. Even though 64,6% (n= 117) considered it useful taking into account clinical practise. The respondents had poor knowledge about the resources in family planning, 79% (n=118). The female doctor showed a greater information about family planning topics (p=0,001). The younger physicians (<35 years old) and those with few years of clinical practise (<8 years) referred more constantly the importance of professional qualification on family planning (p=0,034; p=0,034). Despite the care of women in childbearing age the issues on drug interactions haven't been addressed constantly. There is evidence of a poor knowledge of the respondents of existing resources which limits an effective contraceptive counselling. -

Um estudo comparativo do desempenho de aplicações paralelizadas em cenários distintos
Publicationby Sá, Alex G. C. deOther Authors: Pereira, M. R.; Moura, P. M.Origin: OasisbrThis paper presents a comparative study of the performance of multithreaded applications in different scenarios. These applications use the concept of threads to solve tasks. To make each scenario being evaluated were considered four factors: threads programming platform (or library), operating system, operating system architecture and the priority of running processes. We analyzed the performance obtained in mathematical applications in a multicore processor. The runtime operations and the number of parameters were used in comparative performance. Results showed that the factors referred to are actually relevant to the parallelism inherent to multicore architectures.
