Criterios para una definición de la literatura homoerótica latina

    Publication
    by Mora, Carlos de Miguel

The Spanish Civil War and the press of Aveiro

    Publication
    by Mora, Carlos de Miguel
In the essay under review, I aim at analyzing the news stories published in four newspapers headquartered in Aveiro at the outset of the Spanish Civil War. Hence, I shall attempt to understand the impact of censorship in the regional press located in this Portuguese district, which, at the time, possessed the largest circulation of regional/local newspapers in the entire country. As such, I have come to the realization that the SPN cataloged these newspapers on the grounds of their ideological leaning. Their news stories, however, did not always match with this classification. Lastly, I focused on the figure of Homem Christo, who stands out among his peers, notably for his astuteness and for his journalistic integrity.

Serpens torquens: um tipo especial de hipérbato em latim

    Publication
    by Mora, Carlos de Miguel
After a survey of the ways in which the figure of hyperbaton has been dealt with from Antiquity to present times, it can be noticed that the commentators that have approached the subject have based their considerations on three criteria, namely rhetorical, morphological-syntactic and stylistic. Whereas the first two allow, to a certain extent, a closed classification of the distinct figure types, it is obvious that the third can only have descriptive value when applied to the stylistic effects achieved by each single occurrence, only allowing an open classification. By adopting this criterion and taking into account some considerations made by Renaissance poeticians on the dispositio, we can conjecture about the existence of a specialised type of hyperbaton, following the onomatopoeia-alliteration pattern, that is allowing the material representation of content through form. A few examples taken from the Culex of the Appendix Vergiliana and from Lucan’s Pharsalia prove that this type of hyperbaton really exists in Latin literature.

As leituras dos humanistas: fontes secundárias de Manuel da Costa

    Publication
    by Mora, Carlos de Miguel
It has often been said that the Latin poetic production of Renaissance Portugal lacks epic texts, even though the cultural atmosphere of the period seemed, to a certain extent, to require a poem that praised the glories of the Discoveries. Although this judgement is valid in the strict sense, it has to be put into perspective, since there are humanistic poetic pieces imbued with an epic spirit which pervades their essential characteristics. In this article we intend to show that this epic spirit shapes the poetic work of the jurisconsult and humanist Manuel da Costa, by studying its characteristics, technical devices and, especially, its secondary sources, since it is undeniable that the knowledge of the humanists’ readings provides an insight into their preferences, both in terms of themes and genres.
