Estrada de ferro araraquarense in the framework: the industrial landscapes of the west of São Paulo State as a heritage of the mobility
State as a heritage of the mobility. ABSTRACT: In order to improve the knowledge about the influence of railways in the State of São Paulo in Brazil, it was elaborated a study able to reconstitute its history. The impacts of the railways can be analyzed in many fields of study as economical, urban, or technological fields. The development of the western part of the State had the rails as an important actor that used to follow its main product, the coffee. Thus, even developing because of many different cultures, the cities from Estrada de Ferro Araraquarense had the coffee as the first sponsor of their railways. All the cities of the railway were able to attract a huge number of industrial activities and to cause many urban transformations. Araraquara is just the first city among of a total of 71 that was influenced by the rail line Araraquarense. As the beginning of a puzzle, the catalogue of Araraquara’s urban and industrial heritage, linked with the railway, is able to show many unexplored railways heritages linked to the urban planning and mobility of goods, people and technology, which must be seen as an identity of the region and should be conserved as some famous examples of preservation; ESTRADA DE FERRO ARARAQUARENSE DANS LE CADRE: Les paysages industriels de l’ouest de l’état de São Paulo en tant que patrimoine de la mobilité.

Heritage and Management: the vanishing of the first rail network of Seville (Spain)
Publicationby Lourencetti, Fernanda de LimaImplemented in the network of two companies at the end of the 19th century, Seville's first railway lines constituted a large network, and a variety of construction techniques and architectural typologies that were completely deactivated in 1992. Although the plans for installation and use of railway systems are fundamentally linked to the idea of an operational complex, the methods applied in the preservation of their buildings were and continue to be fragmented, meaning, based on specific strategies conservation and rehabilitation. After a historical contextualization and, based on a field study, this article will present Seville’s railway remnants and their current condition. The aim is to discuss the railway preservation issue, encouraged by urban planning which has eventually led to the application of one-off preservation strategies, contributing to the reflection on a challenge still present in the ways of safeguarding railway heritage. -

Port-railway connection in Setúbal (Portugal) – an understanding of the past for a sustainable future.
Publicationby Lourencetti, Fernanda de LimaThis article aims to analyse the process of connecting the railway and the port of Setúbal within the development of sustainable urban policies. Since the nineteenth century, cities have faced challenges concerning the logistics of transportation. The urban specificities of port cities attracted the attention of experts in the mid-twentieth century, after some cities had relocated or restructured their port areas. Consequently, by the end of the twentieth century, intermodality became a fundamental tool to guarantee a sustainable urban plan. Currently, the sustainability paradigm has increased the concerns about port cities, due to their environmental, social, and economic qualities. This article aims to explore the historical relationship between the railway and the port of Setúbal. Focus is placed on the attempts to develop an intermodal system in Setúbal, while confronting it with its urban development. By discussing the restructuring process of the port of Setúbal since the arrival of the railway, this paper provides an overview of the interests and actors involved in the connection between these infrastructures. The historical analysis of the port-rail infrastructure reveals the urgency of this kind of understanding for current and future sustainable urban planning. -

Enhancing the Cultural Value of Railways in the Western Region of São Paulo State (Brazil)
Publicationby Lourencetti, Fernanda de LimaIn order to improve the knowledge of the influence of the railways in the State of São Paulo (Brazil), this article presents the proposal of an industrial inventory to upgrade this infrastructure. The French were pioneers in the field of inventory. In addition, their railway system has become an international model. This is why the best known of their achievements have served as a reference for historical research. The railway has been an essential factor of progress in the western region of the State of São Paulo, its development accompanying that of coffee, the region's major production. However, the cities of the Estrada de Ferro Araraquarense have had more important cultivations for their development than coffee. In each city the railway was able to attract a huge industrial legacy and to cause many urban transformations. Araraquara is just the first city of this line influenced by this infrastructure, but it had one of the main State stations, as Lille, Lyon and Marseille in France. Thus, like the beginning of a jigsaw puzzle, working on the inventory of the urban and industrial heritage of Araraquara reveals the role played by the railway in the development of town planning and industry, as well as in the mobility of goods, people and knowledge. -

The main goal of this research is to identify the similarities and differences in the way railway-port links and railway heritage preservation practices were established over time in cities located on the Iberian coast bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The aim is to present a historical approach to the relationships established between port areas, railways and urban development in the period between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 21st century. The methodology employed is a comparative analysis by pairs of three Portuguese cities, Lisbon, Setúbal and Porto, and three Spanish cities, Seville, Cadiz and Vigo. The selection of these cities was based on the similarity of their geographic and demographic characteristics, with Lisbon being studied in parallel with Seville, Setúbal in parallel with Cadiz and Porto in parallel with Vigo. The approach is interdisciplinary and seeks to contribute to the historiography that has studied the port-rail connection. Considering contemporary preservation practices, which make use of Digital Humanities and urban networking, a proposal for an Open Access platform is presented, which aims to contribute to the promotion of knowledge and foster the elaboration of new strategies for the preservation of railway heritage in port cities in the Iberian Peninsula. -
