Descrição do caso clínico: Paciente do sexo masculino, 21 anos, ASA I e não fumador.

Outros Autores: Mendes, N.; Romeu, Vicente; Ferreira, Tiago; Azenha, Miguel
In the present work, a BIM environment has been employed in order to streamline the numerical modelling and structural seismic analysis of existing URM-RC buildings, taking advantage of the interoperability between the BIM modelling software and the numerical analysis software. Thus, the main objective is the validation of an assessment methodology based on the discussion and comparison between the experimental test results from a shaking table test campaign, and the numerical results obtained with two different approaches: an advanced numerical modelling approach based on Finite Element Models (FEM), and a simplified numerical modelling approach based on Equivalent Frame Models (EFM). A comparative study of the modelling strategies will put forward their advantages and limitations when applied to mixed URM-RC buildings, and to investigate the suitability of the chosen approaches to assess the influence of the strengthening interventions for the case-study building.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is to characterize the potteries of Garb al-Andalus based on data from archaeological interventions, published so far. There is an almost exclusive distribution of pottery contexts south of the Tagus River and in an urban environment, although this perspective depends essentially on preventive archaeology surveys that may not correspond to reality. The productions from these kilns are, in general, similar to others in al-Andalus, especially for the period between the late 11th century and early 13th century. Keywords: Pottery workshops; Garb al-Andalus; South; kilns; ceramics.

The use of reinforced concrete (RC) in retrofitting interventions on existing unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings has been spreading all over the world since the beginning of the twentieth century. However, many of these mixed URM–RC buildings have revealed to be particularly vulnerable to seismic action, and their inherent complex structural behaviour is still understudied. In fact, the interaction effects from coupling RC structural elements to URM loadbearing walls is still a contentious issue for most of the research community. In this context, the present paper represents a steppingstone for the thorough understanding of the influence of strengthening interventions with RC in existing URM buildings, namely, regarding the addition of reinforcement layers on the horizontal diaphragms, and the insertion of ring beams at the roof level. This article describes a finite element nonlinear static analysis of a representative URM-RC building, before and after the introduction of the RC strengthening elements. The models used in these finite element-based analyses have been automatically created from BIM models correspondent to two full-scale prototype buildings (unstrengthened and strengthened configurations), analysed experimentally in a shaking table test campaign performed at the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE). The obtained results have been calibrated based on experimental results and compared with other numerical results obtained resorting to a macroelement-based model, found in the literature. As presented and discussed in this article, the refined finite element models have provided a better approximation of the experimental seismic behaviour of the building than the macroelement models. Plus, the refined finite element models have allowed to assess the influence of each strengthening element when applied separately.

BIM-based methodology for the seismic performance assessment of existing URM-RC buildings

    Publicação
    por Lopes, Gonçalo Correia
Mixed unreinforced masonry-reinforced concrete (URM–RC) buildings have revealed to be extremely vulnerable to seismic loads, and the interaction effects from coupling RC structural elements to URM loadbearing walls is still a contentious issue amongst the research community. Considering their constructive complexity, with different structural modifications over time, these URM-RC structures may take advantage of innovative and practical tools for a fast and reliable seismic performance assessment. The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been changing the paradigm of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Regarding the assessment of existing buildings, one of the applications of BIM with more potential concerns the so-called “reverse engineering”, which consists in recreating the existing “as-built” structure into a BIM model, which can be automatically converted into an accurate 3D numerical model. Then, based on its numerical analysis, it is possible to perform the structural health assessment and, eventually, the design of possible structural retrofit solutions. This BIM environment was employed in the present work to streamline the numerical modelling and structural seismic analysis of existing URM-RC buildings, taking advantage of the interoperability between the BIM modelling software and the numerical analysis software. In this context, the presented BIM-based methodology for the seismic performance assessment of existing URM-RC buildings is based on the pushover analysis using two modelling approaches: an advanced numerical modelling approach based on Finite Element Models (FEM), and a simplified numerical modelling approach based on Equivalent Frame Models (EFM). In order to use the simplified approach, a BIM-based computational tool was developed for the automatic creation of the EFM. For that purpose, three case-study buildings were adopted to demonstrate the applicability of this methodology, consisting of the analysis of representative URM buildings, both before and after the strengthening intervention with RC. The validation of the presented methodology is based on the discussion and comparison between the experimental test results from a shaking table test campaign from the literature, and the numerical results obtained with two different approaches.

Sheathing and Pay Techniques in the Boa Vista 1 Ship (Lisbon, Portugal)

    Publicação
    por Lopes, Gonçalo C.
    Outros Autores: Petrucci-Fonseca, Francisco
Between September 2012 and February 2013, archaeological excavations carried out in the riverside area of Lisbon (Portugal) revealed the remains of two wooden ships: Boa Vista 1 (BV1) and Boa Vista 2 (BV2), both dating from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. BV1 ship consists of scattered hull timbers which were damaged and out of their original positions. Some of the ship’s hull features are common in the Mediterranean like a composite keel with butt joints and hook scarfs in the connection between floors and futtocks, while others are well-known Iberian shipbuilding features like the transition between the keel and the sternpost being made through a single piece, the heel. A unique feature was a layer of animal hair between the sheathing and the hull planking. This paper focuses mainly on the study of wooden sheathing, including but not limited to the analysis of its conventional “architectural signatures”. The latest results concerning animal hair identification will also be presented and discussed, showing the added value of multidisciplinary approaches in archaeology.
