L’INTERCOMPRÉHENSION POUR LA PROMOTION DE LA LANGUE FRANÇAISE DANS L’INTERNATIONALISATION DES UNIVERSITÉS BRÉSILIENNES

    Publication
    by Guimarães,Felipe Furtado
    Origin: Oasisbr

Internationalization and Language Policies in Brazil: What is the Relationship?

    Publication
    by Guimarães,Felipe Furtado
Other Authors: Finardi,Kyria Rebeca; Casotti,Janayna Bertollo Cozer
    Origin: Oasisbr
ABSTRACT The article reflects on the relationship between the internationalization of higher education and language policies in Brazil. The study provides a review of language policy literature and internationalization policies materialized in national programs, such as the Science without Borders (SwB) and the Languages without Borders (LwB). The analysis of internationalization policies suggests that language policies are at the core of the internationalization agenda, concerning the role of English in this process; however, the role of other foreign/additional languages (L2s) still seems to be disconnected, whereby other languages lack funding and alignment with solid language policies at all educational levels. The analysis of language policies reveals the need to think about the role of L2s at different educational levels as well as in multilingualism in Brazil and in the internationalization of higher education.

Digital resources and English as an additional language in higher education: possibilities for internationalization

    Publication
    by Guimarães, Felipe Furtado
Other Authors: Hildeblando Júnior, Carlos Alberto
    Origin: Oasisbr
The objective of this study is to discuss possibilities of adopting digital resources for teaching/learning English as a second language (L2) within higher education contexts (in general) and within a public university in Brazil (in particular). Key aspects in the literature review (which includes approaches such as COIL, MOOCs and EMI) are compared with the scenario and activities of a university in the Global South, in order to discuss the use of digital resources in teaching/learning English as L2. Results suggest that a critical use of technologies is necessary to promote a more balanced and sustainable process for language teaching/learning. Institutional support is also fundamental for teachers and students develop skills necessary for an increasingly interconnected world. The conclusion indicates that a combination of alternative practices can foster an effective language teaching/learning process in higher education institutions, supported by digital resources.

INTERNATIONALIZATION AND LANGUAGE POLICIES IN BRAZIL: EVIDENCE OF THE INTERFACE AT UFES

    Publication
    by Guimarães, Felipe Furtado
    Other Authors: Finardi, Kyria Rebeca
    Origin: Oasisbr
This paper discusses the interface between internationalization and language policies in general in Brazil by looking for evidence and traces of evidence in a local context. More specifically, Brazilian national programs such as the Science without Borders (SwB), the Languages without Borders (LwB) and the Capes PrInt call are analysed in the national context, as evidence of national policies. Then, the analysis and discussion zooms in a local context to find evidence of these policies in the recently approved internationalization and language policies of the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES) located in the Southeast of Brazil. Overall the analysis concludes that UFES internationalization and language policies are related and aligned with national policies having been induced by them in a reactive way.KEYWORDS: internationalization; language policies; UFES.

    Origin: Oasisbr

    Origin: Oasisbr
Abstract The large number of less-known coastal drainages in the Atlantic Forest still represents an important gap in the knowledge of ichthyofauna. It is evaluated the taxonomic diversity, frequency and constancy of occurrence, and the distribution of species in the various segments of the Perequê-Açu river basin, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Twelve sampling campaigns resulted in 13,423 individuals, belonging to seven orders, 10 families, 21 genera, and 23 native species. Cyprinodontiformes and Siluriformes represented about 87.2% of the total abundance, mainly due to the contribution of Phalloceros anisophallos and Schizolecis guntheri, which account for 63.2% of the total sampled individuals. The analysis of constancy of occurrence reveals that 78.3% of the drainage species are residents, with approximately 93% of the residents of the Carrasquinho River sub-basin. The Sertões River sub-basin had the largest number of species in total: 18. The rarefaction curve did not reach an asymptote, although Chao 2 and bootstrap estimate the richness of 23.9 species and 23.7 species, respectively. The results of PERMANOVA, PCoA, and SIMPER indicate that the fish composition along the catchment is not homogeneous. The conservation status of species is also discussed, regionally, nationally, and globally.

Wood anatomy of trees of “canela” species (Ocotea and Nectandra, Lauraceae) from Santa Catarina, Brazil

    Publication
    by Guimarães, Felipe Bernardino
Other Authors: Tomazello Filho, Mário; Rodrigues, Ana Claudia
    Origin: Oasisbr
The trees known as “canela” belong to the genera Ocotea and Nectandra (Lauraceae) and are difficult to identify at the genus and species level based on their wood. The present work describes anatomical and organoleptic characteristics of the wood of Ocotea and Nectandra species that can be used for identification. Wood discs were collected at breast height (BH 1.30 m) from trunks of Nectandra megapotamica, N. lanceolata, Ocotea porosa, O. puberula, O. pulchella and Ocotea sp., in four municipalities in the interior of Santa Catarina State. The macroscopic anatomy and organoleptic characteristics were described based on standard techniques used in wood anatomy studies. The results show that the species of Nectandra and Ocotea can be separated by their axial parenchyma distinctness, diagonal arrangement of vessels, wood color and odor. A dichotomous key to the studied species of Lauraceae is also provided. The present work found that it was possible to identify the species studied using macroscopic anatomy and organoleptic properties of the wood; however, it was not possible to distinguish Ocotea from Nectandra.
