This paper focuses on the influence of Digital Elevation Models on the landslides susceptibility assessment in agricultural terraces, using Logistic Regression statistical model. This study was performed in a watershed located at Carvalhas Estate in Douro Valley, using an inventory of 109 landslides. To analyse the influence of the digital elevation model (DEM) resolution we used three DEMs, (A), (B) and (C). The DEMs (A) and (B) were directly obtained by processing aerial images and extracting different resolutions, 1 and 5 meters, respectively. The DEM (C), with 5m resolution, was processed with Topo to Raster interpolation method, using as input data contour lines of 10 m interval, elevation points and hydrography. The Logistic Regression was performed using two models which are distinguished by the independent variables selection. At model 1 was used the slope, curvature, raiser slope, riser height, contributing areas and topographic wetness index. In model 2 we decide remove the independent variables related with the terrace geometry, riser slope and riser height. The result seems to indicate that there is no significant influence of different resolutions of Digital Elevation Models in susceptibility modelling at this small scale and using statistical methods. The independent variables riser slope and riser height provide information of the terraces geometry and the construction techniques that enter the modelling process with more detailed information.

The perception of the associated impacts among possible management schemes introduces a new way to assess energy storage systems. The ability to define a specific management scheme considering the different stakeholder objectives, both technical and economic, will increase the perception of available installation options. This paper presents a multiobjective feasibility assessment methodology using an improved version of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, to optimize the placement of electric energy storage units in order to improve the operation of distribution networks. The model is applied to a case study, using lithium-ion battery technology as an example. The results show the influence of different charging/discharging profiles on the choice of the best battery location, as well as the influence that these choices may have on the different network management objectives, e.g. increasing the integration of renewable generation. As an additional outcome, the authors propose a pricing scheme for filling the present regulatory gap regarding the pricing scheme to be applied to energy storage in order to allow the exploitation of viable business models.

The present study aims at understanding the behaviour of the induction motor when subject to different kinds of disturbances. The intention was to broaden the study of some disturbances by using a transient simulation software, ATP/EMTP, and comparing results with laboratory measurements. Obtained simulation results approached very closely the laboratory measurements, with small differences probably due to the model simplifying assumptions and uncertainties associated to the model parameter estimation process. However, although this theoretical model presents a response very similar to the actual model, improvements could be made by better modelling of the mechanical load, and by using different kinds of dynamic loads. Also, the use of more accurate laboratory equipment, and namely, programmable power supplies could lead to more accurate comparisons and better learning.

    Origem: IC-online
A methodology to assist a decision maker (DM) on the assessment of feasible solutions to implement a distributed electric energy storage system (DEESS) is presented. The chosen system is based on the nanophosphate lithium-ion battery technology due to its increasing use in electricity networks and to the advantages when compared to other commercially available technologies. The proposed methodology perfoms the choice of locations, using a definition of the best schedule of operation, while simultaneously optimizing four objective functions: the minimization of losses, voltage deviations and investment cost, and the maximization of the net gains of exploiting the differences among time varying energy prices. Results show that the best DEESS location depends on the energy service to be provided, namely of the goal of the DM that defines the management scheme of the DEESS, suggesting the need to incorporate this level of decision on the multiple objective formulation and making this methodology appropriate for different types of stakeholders.

Abstract: This investigation’s goal is to analyze the possibility of convergence of data and voice technologies in Portuguese Air Force (POAF). The growing utilization of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) with the consequence of the progressive abandon of the traditional voice networks is one of the most discussed subjects in today’s business world. The exchange of information, either data, voice or image, with security, reliability and speed, in real or near-real time, are, today, fundamental requirements to an efficient command and control action, in military domain. In this essay, two large networks were identified to carry all the communications and information traffic of POAF: a data network and a voice network. From the analysis we conclude that the existing technology with the infrastructure that supports these two networks will, with inherent advantages, lead to convergence

Abstract: The present work examines the capabilities of Brazil in the international state of affairs at present and its relationship with the main international players, especially in its privileged area of action - the South Atlantic - and assesses its ability and will to assert itself as a world power, trying to identify the tools of power and the inherent responsibilities of this policy. Brazil can use its economic, political and military factors as tools of power to assert itself as a prominent player of the International Political System, especially the economic and political factors. At the economic level, the territorial dimension, the population and natural resources places it on the level of the great powers, and suggests that the position of Brazil in the world ranking might go up with better internal cohesion, a greater regional integration and more internationalization of the economy and brazilian companies in the world. At the political level the use of multilateral strategies and international South-South cooperation, as privileged tools of brazilian soft power produced a very positive outcome, and granted it a quality status of economic power that led it to be prominent in all the relevant forums, like G13 and G20. What is still to be achieved is its integration as a permanent member of United Nations Security Council. The will demonstrated by the political power of Brazil with the adoption of the National Defense Strategy represents a significant step forward in the country’s ability of disposing of an additional instrument of power that will match the level of participation that the country aspires in the world level, in the near future. The cooperation with the major players with interests in the South Atlantic are fundamental for the affirmation of Brazil as a regional power and this can be seen as a step for its confirmation as a world power. And the affirmation of Brazil is also based on the assumption of its responsibilities in the international scene, strengthening its commitment to global security and prosperity. In conclusion, the strategic potential of Brazil due to the strength of the geopolitical and geostrategic factors places it as a regional power in South America and as a world power in the medium term (2020 to 2030).

Abstract: The work studies the theme of building defence capabilities through the Pooling and Sharing and Smart Defence initiatives, aiming to know how the Portuguese military can build military capabilities using those initiatives. The research was conducted in order to frame the issue by conceptual analysis of those initiatives, followed by an analysis of the framework of Portugal in strategic terms and its position in the international community and forces planning procedures adopted by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, by the European Union and Portugal and the way they articulate with each other, followed by an analysis of the projects in which Portugal participates in order to verify their connections to the capabilities that are part of the National Forces System. Following on from the work the political orientations were analysed on the subject, the evaluation criteria used in support of the decision on the participation of Portugal in the projects created or underway in those initiatives, and addressed the issue of the effects of multinational cooperation on national sovereignty. At the end of the study, we characterized the advantages and the embarrassment of these cooperative initiatives and concluded that there are some changes that should be made for a better use of these initiatives by Portugal and consequently by the Armed Forces.
