Electrozone Sensing Goes Nano
Publicationby Figueiredo, MargaridaOther Authors: Ferreira, Paulo J.; Campos, Elisa J.Recent advances in nanopore-based technologies and microelectronics allowed the resurgence of Coulter counter-based techniques. Known collectively as resistive pulse sensing, this technique is now capable of characterizing nanoscale objects, such as nanoparticles, viruses, DNA, and other polymers, while keeping the main attractions of the classical versions: simplicity, sensitivity and resolution, and single-object readout. Besides an accurate characterization of both size and concentration of the nanoparticles in their natural environment, additional information about particle surface charge is currently possible in an individual basis. Furthermore, efforts have been made to integrate the nanopores in microfluidic systems with the inherent advantages in terms of portability and cost as well as the ability to integrate multiple functions. This survey aims to review the progress in resistive pulse sensing toward the characterization of submicron particles, with special emphasis on nanopore design (natural and synthetic) and on lab-on-a-chip devices. -

Assessment of water consumers literacy
Publicationby Figueiredo, MargaridaOther Authors: Neves, José; Vicente, Henrique; Chaves, Humberto; Fernandes, Ana LuísaNowadays, an increasing amount of water is used without the awareness that this resource is not inexhaustible. In fact, pollution, environmental degradation and/or climate change caused by human activities lead to the degradation of the quality of available water. In 2015, the United Nations warned about the risk of reaching a water deficit of 40%, in 2030, if consumption patterns are not changed. Indeed, population growth is one of the main causes for this deficit. The protection and sustainable consumption of water is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Develop-ment Goals, to ensure that the world’s population has access to clean water, free from pollution and managed responsibly. Thus, governments and non-governmental orga-nizations must promote the conscious and informed use of water by the population. It is mandatory that the population becomes aware of the need for efficient manage-ment of water resources, ensuring their quality and preventing their degradation, in order to not compromise/jeopardize their future availability. The knowledge of the population’s literacy on water issues and on water quality—health interconnections is essential to design plans leading to the implementation of eco-sustainable practices. The goal of this research was to evaluate the literacy of water consumers and to estab-lish a forecast model for water literacy managing. The collection of information was conducted through the inquiry by questionnaire technique and applied on a cohort encompassing 453 participants. The questionnaire includes three main dimensions (WaterQuality, DiseasePrevention andSustainability/PublicHealthPromotion) and in each dimension, four competencies were evaluated (obtain, understand, assess and apply information regarding water consumption). The results obtained allow to assert that in the two first dimensions, the competence in which participants show more difficulty is assess. Regarding the Sustainability/Public Health Promotion, the participants show more difficulty in the competence apply. The model presented in this research, grounded on the connectionist paradigm, has shown great efficiency in the forecast of the target variable. The key contribution of the present research is to present an integrated and systematic approach that can give a contribution to the increase of water literacy, which allows the implementation of eco-sustainable practices. -

Assessment of literacy to biotechnological solutions for environmental sustainability in Portugal
Publicationby Figueiredo, MargaridaOther Authors: Dias, Alexandre; Neves, José; Vicente, HenriqueIn today’s world, the importance of preserving the environment has become increasingly evident. As a result, more sustainable solutions and techniques are being developed to combat environmental destruction. Higher education institutions are now including environmental themes in their technological courses to promote sustainable behavior and indirectly enhance environmental literacy among the population. This study aims to evaluate the level of literacy to biotechnological solutions for environmental sustainability in four areas, namely Air Pollution, Aquatic Pollution, Global Warming, and Energy Resources. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample consisting of 471 individuals of both genders, age range between 15 and 78 years old, to collect data characterizing the sample and assess their literacy in environmental issues. The questionnaire was distributed in Portugal, and the participants were asked to indicate their level of agreement with several statements related to the aforementioned environmental themes. The findings suggest that literacy regarding biotechnological solutions for environmental sustainability is influenced by age group and academic qualifications. The age group above 65 years old is the one with the lowest levels of literacy, exhibiting frequencies of response I don’t know exceeding 50% in 10 out of the 22 issues present in the questionnaire. The findings also suggest that the levels of literacy are higher in the thematic areas of Global Warming and Aquatic Pollution and lower in the thematic areas of Air Pollution and Energy Resources, with lower levels of literacy in the issues that have not been widely disseminated by the media. Additionally, a model based on Artificial Neural Networks was presented to predict literacy to biotechnological solutions for environmental sustainability. The proposed model performs well, achieving accuracy rates of 90.8% for the training set and 86.6% for the test set.
