Managing temporary agency workers’ well-being: the role of resilience and work alienation

    Publication
    by Ferreira, P.
    Other Authors: Gomes, S.
The well being of temporary workers is still understudied, especially the role of individual resources as promoters of well being. As such, t his paper aims to examine the role of resilience as a resource for enhancing work engagement and reducing burnout of temporary agency workers. Additionally, thi s study tests the mediating role of work alienation. The study follows a quantitative approach. Based on a sample of 2.054 temporary agency workers, a set of hypotheses were tested using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS SEM), usi ng SmartPLS3.0. The results show that resilience is positively related to work engagement and negatively related to burnout. Work alienation plays a mediating role between resilience and burnout and work engagement of temporary agency workers by reducing t he effect of resilience. This study novelty highlights the contribution of resilience as a mechanism to reduce burnout and enhance work engagement, but also about the importance of preventing work alienation. Since resilience can be learned and work aliena tion can be avoided, this study has important implications for human resources management strategies and practices.

Therapeutic approaches based on nucleic acids to modulate cell activity have recently gained attention. These molecules arise from complex biotechnological processes, requiring effective manufacturing strategies, high purity, and precise quality control to be used as biopharmaceuticals. One of the most critical and time-consuming steps for nucleic acids-based biotherapeutics manufacturing is their purification, mainly due to the complexity of the extracts. In this study, a simple, efficient, and reliable method to isolate and clarify plasmid DNA (pDNA) from complex samples is described. The method is based on the selective capture of RNA and other impurities, using pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) with different diameters were studied to determine their adsorption capacity and to address their ability to interact and distinguish between nucleic acids. The results revealed that MWCNTs preferentially interact with RNA and that smaller MWCNTs present a higher adsorption capacity, as expected by the higher specific surface area. Overall, this study showed that MWCNTs significantly reduce the levels of impurities, namely RNA, gDNA, and proteins, by approximately 83.6 % compared to their initial level, enabling the recovery of clarified pDNA in solution while maintaining its stability throughout the recovery process. This method facilitates the pre-purification of pDNA for therapeutic applications.

    Publication
    by Ferreira, P

Cancers of unknown primary site constitute a heterogeneous group having in common their biological behaviour. We have analysed patients with cancer of unknown primary site admitted to University Hospital of Coimbra/Internal Medicine Service III from 1st January of 1992 to 30th June of 1998. The study included 26 patients corresponding to a prevalence of 2.5% malignant neoplasias; the median age of affected patients was 64 years old with a male-to-female ratio of 4.2:1. The most frequent histological type was well differentiated and moderately well differentiated adenocarcinoma, 46.1% of all cases. Three years global survival rate was 3.9%. The herein-reported prevalence is comparable to that found in recent literature, showing a good diagnostic skill. As expected, the prognosis was poor, revealing the disease's aggressiveness and the lack of efficient therapy in the majority of case.
