Evaluation of the effectiveness of a relaxation intervention on distress in university students : a randomized controlled trial
Publicationby Costa, RitaOther Authors: C. Machado, José; Brandão, Tânia; Pereira, M.Graça; Remondes-CostaAbstract: Excessive, abusive, or inappropriate use of mobile phones can have a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. This study aims to adapt the Phubbing Scale (PS) and the Generic Scale of Being Phubbed (GSBP) for the Portuguese population, establishing the convergent validity of the instruments with others that assess approximate constructs, such as the Partner Phubbing Scale (PPS) and the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), and investigate the differences and/or relationships between sociodemographic variables, mobile phone usage variables and the PS and the GSBP. This is a cross sectional study, including 641 participants, aged between 18-71 (M=27.91; SD=10.60). The Portuguese version of the PS kept the number of items and factors, however, distributed differently from the original version. The Portuguese version of the GSBP kept the structure proposed by the authors of the original version. The correlations obtained by both scales with other instruments ensured convergent validity. Differences were found in the values of the scales according to some sociodemographic variables and some variables regarding mobile phone use. The findings provide culturally adapted and validated two instruments and are helpful to researchers to assess this phenomenon and intervene in a timely manner. -

Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Response to RedBull® Energy Drink Intake in Young Adults
Publicationby Costa, RitaOther Authors: Rocha, Clara; Santos, HelderBackground: Energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, sucrose, vitamins, and other amino acids. The dosage of these varies depending on the drink chosen. Several studies on energy drinks have been carried out, but the results obtained are still inconsistent as well as the risk associated with consumption. This study analyzed the cardio- and cerebrovascular responses after consumption of an energy drink – RedBull® – under standardized pre- and post-ingestion conditions and its impact on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system. Methods: A sample of 30 healthy young adult females was recruited and subjected to 3 moments of evaluation: at baseline, 30 minutes after ingesting the energy drink, and 60 minutes after ingesting it according to a non-randomized pre–post intervention study design. Results: It is found that over time there are significant changes in peak systolic velocity (P = .006) and endodiastolic velocity (P < .001) of common carotid artery, peak systolic velocity (P = .007), and endodiastolic velocity (P < .001) of internal carotid artery, peak systolic velocity (P = .004), end endodiastolic velocity (P = .013) of the external carotid artery, endodiastolic velocity (P = .042) of the middle cerebral artery, cardiac output (P = .004), and heart rate (P < .001). Conclusions: After the consumption of Redbull®, there was a decrease in the velocities of the carotid arteries and the middle cerebral artery as well as a decrease in cardiac output accompanied by a decrease in heart rate and a slight, although not significant, increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressures. However, it is still unclear which pathophysiological mechanisms are responsible for these changes. -

Olfactory specialization in the senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis): CO2 acidified water triggers nostril-specific immune processes
Publicationby Costa, RitaOther Authors: Hubbard, Peter; Manchado, Manuel; Power, Deborah Mary; Velez, ZéliaIncreased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean is changing seawater chemistry. Behavioural alterations in CO2 exposed fish have been linked to changes in the central nervous system (CNS). However, we hypothesise that receptor cells in direct contact with the environment are more susceptible to changes in water chemistry than the CNS. Electrophysiology, histology, and transcriptomics were used to explore the effect of exposure to CO2 acidified water on the olfactory epithelium (OE) of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). The upper and lower OE of this flatfish detect different odorants and are in contact with different environments. Acute exposure to acidified water decreased olfactory sensitivity more in the upper than in the lower OE. After chronic exposure to high CO2 there were no histological changes in the upper OE; however, in the lower OE, there was a massive infiltration of melanomacrophage (MMC) and tissue disorganization. In addition, in the upper OE, differential expressed gene transcripts (DETs) were related to inflammation and innate immune processes whereas in the lower OE, DETs were related to the adaptative immune response. Differential regulation of genes related to neurogenesis and plasticity occurred in both epithelia. The effects of ocean acidification in sole OE depends on the nostril; however, the occurrence of an exacerbated immune response, OE remodelling and reduced sensitivity indicate that ocean acidification is likely to have significant and unpredictable consequences for behaviour. -

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a relaxation intervention on distress in university students: A randomized controlled trial
Publicationby Costa, RitaOther Authors: C. Machado, José; Brandão, Tânia; Pereira, M. Graça; Remondes-Costa, SóniaOrigin: Análise PsicológicaUniversity students are particularly vulnerable to stress due to the demands of higher education and the developmental transition from adolescence to adulthood. The adverse effects of prolonged stress responses highlight the importance of the development of coping skills. Relaxation appears as a tool capable of restoring the resources depleted by stress and increasing positive emotions, cultivating also self-compassion. This study aimed (1) evaluate the effectiveness of a relaxation training program in university students, using a randomized controlled trial comparing an active control group (exposed to listening to relaxing music) and a passive control groups (without any intervention), considering the changes over time in depression, anxiety and stress; (2) to examine how selfcompassion and subjective happiness contributed to depression, anxiety and stress in the full sample; (3) and to examine the moderating role of self-compassion in the association between happiness and depression, anxiety and stress. Anxiety and stress increased for participants in the relaxation training program, alluding to the possible side effects of the initial practice. Higher levels of self-compassion and subjective happiness were both associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress. Programs aimed at increasing self-compassion and subjective happiness seem to be relevant to promote students’ mental health. -
