A balanced cytotrophoblast cell turnover is crucial for placental development and anomalies in this process associated with gestational diseases. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has emerged as a new player in several biological processes. However, its influence during placental development is still unknown. We report here the expression of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) main metabolic enzymes in human cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblast. We also showed that 2-AG induced a decrease in placental alkaline phosphatase activity, human chorionic gonadotropin secretion and Leptin mRNA levels. Moreover, 2-AG reduced glial cell missing 1 and syncytin-2 transcription and the number of nuclei in syncytium. These effects were mediated by cannabinoid receptors and may result from 2-AG inhibition of the cAMP/PKA signalling pathway. Our data suggest that 2-AG may interfere with the biochemical and morphological differentiation of human cytotrophoblasts, through a CB receptor-dependent mechanism, shedding light on a role for the ECS in placental development.

The normal development of placenta relies essentially on a balanced proliferation, differentiation andapoptosis of cytotrophoblasts. These processes are tightly regulated by several hormones, cytokines, lipids and other molecules and anomalies in these events are associated with gestational complications. The cation channel transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is expressed in several organs andtissues and it participates in cellular events like nociception, inflammation and cell death. However, theexpression and importance of this receptor in human placenta still remains unknown. In this work, wefound that TRPV1 is expressed in human cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts. Furthermore, theTRPV1 agonists capsaicin and anandamide decreased cytotrophoblast viability and induced morpho-logical alterations, such as chromatin condensation and fragmentation, which suggest the occurrenceof apoptosis. Also, both TRPV1 agonists induced a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and anincrease of caspase 3/7 activity and production of reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen. Furthermore, capsaicin (10 M) impaired the spontaneous in vitro differentiation of cytotrophoblasts into syncytiotro-phoblasts by triggering TRPV1, as observed by the decrease in placental alkaline phosphatase activity andin human chorionic gonadotropin secretion. On the other hand, anandamide decreased placental alkalinephosphatase activity via a TRPV1-independent mechanism but did not influence the secretion of humanchorionic gonadotropin. In conclusion, we showed that TRPV1 is expressed in human cytotrophoblastsand syncytiotrophoblasts and also reported the involvement of this receptor in cytotrophoblast apoptosisand differentiation.

Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid represents 3 to 10% of all thyroid cancers. Surgery is the main treatment. External beam radiotherapy has a fundamental role in the treatment of residual disease following surgery, in cases of cervical node involvement, and in unresectable tumors. Between 1975 and 1993, 12 patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid were treated at the Department of Radiotherapy of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Oporto. Nine of these patients (75%) were male and 3 (25%) female, ranging from 24 to 80 years of age (mean = 43). All of them had residual tumor after surgery and underwent treatment with external beam radiotherapy. The follow-up period ranged from 36 to 180 months, with a median of 78 months; 8 patients (66.7%) are alive, 5 of them show no evidence of disease. Average survival was 70 months, and 4 patients (33%) died with metastatic disease. The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of external beam radiotherapy in local control of these tumors, with a brief review of the literature.

Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) larvae can avoid foraging on plants of Crotalaria juncea (Fabaceae) after the issuance of floral buds, when the prey of Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) incorporate toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids from this plant. This reduces the predation and favors increasing the number of adults and eggs of this defoliator on crops of this plant. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate some biological and ecological aspects of C. externa and U. ornatrix on the organic crop of C. juncea in the EMBRAPA Maize and Sorghum in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Chrysoperla externa and U. ornatrix were more abundant in the vegetative and flowering stages of C. juncea, respectively, with caterpillars of this defoliator feeding on leaves and seeds of this plant. The duration of the stages/instars, survival, lifetime fecundity, and oviposition showed that the branches of C. juncea are a suitable food for U. ornatrix. The abundance of adults and larvae of C. externa was lower in the flowering and pods stages of C. juncea, respectively, when the postures of U. ornatrix are present, probably due to the toxicity of the eggs of this prey to this predator. During these stages, C. externa may be reared with alternative hosts, and when the crops of C. juncea are scarce, an artificial diet should be used for rearing this defoliator in the laboratory for biological research and the development of biological control tactics.

The purpose of this study was to develop a staining pattern through tetrazolium test to evaluate seed viability of Parkia multijuga Benth (fava-arara-tucupi). The seeds were scarified, soaked into water and distilled for 48 hours for tegument removal and then immersed in a 0.05%; 0.1%; and 0.3% tetrazolium solution for 6; 18 and 24 hours at 35˚C, in the dark. The evaluation was performed on the basis of stain intensity and aspect of the tissues. Based on color patterns, the seed images were classified in eight viability classes. Those results were compared with the germination test in a laboratory. The treatment in concentration of 0.1% for 6 hours was considered adequate for the specie, considering the adequate staining and time for analysis.
