The Brave Apostle? The Power Relations of Jerónimo Fernando and the Municipality of Funchal (1619-1643)

    Publication
    by Costa, Bruno Abreu
This article aims to delve into the power relations exerted in the Madeiran archipelago, in the first half of the 17th century, by analyzing both conflict and cooperation between Jerónimo Fernando, bishop of Funchal (1619-1650), and the city’s municipal officials. One must begin with the bishop’s biography and his historiographical reputation – the one that gave him the moniker of Brave Apostle –, to then study several moments of dispute and agreement between the two institutions. The investigation allowed one to recognize three different periods in which collaboration or competition prevailed, while also admitting that these relations were complex and needed to be problematized. by Costa, Bruno Abreu
This paper intends to achieve two objectives: the first one is to showcase the possibilities of judicial narratives – denunciations and confessions – as sources for an “History of Everyday Life”; the second one is to provide some notes for the study of everyday life of Madeiran people in the 17th century. Serving as this study’s starting point are the cases regarding love and lust that were presented before Francisco Cardoso do Tornéo, the inquisitor responsible for the second visitation of the Tribunal of the Holy Office to Madeira in 1618. Thus, with depositions on bigamy, heretical propositions, sodomy, solicitation and superstitions, one can delve into an analysis of the people involved, their space, actions, and mental framework in an attempt to examine the multiple facets of everyday life in the archipelago of Madeira in the early 17th century. A Esperança (1919-1938): A Materialização de uma Revista Católica de Formação Social Madeirense

    Publication
    by Costa, Bruno Abreu
