The interest in studying droplet related phenomena has been increasing over the last decades. In the fluid dispensing equipment industry, a major problem is to minimize droplet diameter andto eject droplets in a controlled manner with a low-cost device. Taking all this into account, anew low-cost droplet stream generator was designed and fabricated. The material used to man-ufacture the stream droplet generator structure was a 3D printable material, namely PLA, thatminimizes the device cost. This structure has three separate components: piezoelectric lid, fluidchamber, and pinhole holder. The disruptive waves of the disturbance mechanism were applieddirectly to the fluid instead of being applied to the precision pinhole. The interchangeable noz-zle used was a round stainless-steel high precision optical pinhole with three different sizes:100μm,150μm, and200μm. Jet attribute properties (droplet diameter, droplet velocity, anddistance between droplets) were measured as the different conditions changed (piezoelectriccell frequency, outlet pressure, and fluid). The present work studied the spray characteristicsand different monodisperse regimes. A full characterisation of them is presented and discussedin detail.

Fabrication Of Adhesively-Bonded CFRP T-Joints For Stiffener Pull-Off Tests

    Publication

    Origin: uBibliorum
Adhesively bonded joints have been increasingly applied in primary aerostructures, mainly due to their numerous advantages over riveted or fastened joints. More specifically, bonded T-joints made from carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) are commonly found as stiffening members (stiffeners, or stringers) on wing panels and fuselage sections. However, aluminium stiffeners can yet be considered a safer and more conservative solution, since composite T-joints face delamination problems that typically initiate at the central noodle of the stiffener - the part where the three arms of the stiffener come together. In order to better comprehend the failure mechanisms and sequence of these joints, Stiffener-Pull- Off Tests (SPOT) were experimentally conducted on a two CFRP adherends (SEAL® Texipreg HS 160 REM) - skin and stiffener - adhesively bonded with a structural film adhesive (EA451 U150). These specimens were fabricated following a novel fabrication plan, which left open the possibility of re-engineering the noodle region with the scope of increasing the through-thickness strength of the bonded joint. This can be achieved by eliminating the problem of the twisted fibres at the noodle that occur during the cure stage when no filler material is used.

    Publication
    by Cardoso, João
Abstract: The Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) has been using and monitoring the evolution of some Geographic Information Systems in two different ways: asset management and mission planning. Disclosure and interest in geographic information (GI) distribution web platforms has been growing, as is the case of Infrastructure Information System (SIINFRAS). However, the initial objectives of this platform don’t give full response to current PoAF's needs. In this context, this research aims to analyze the current state of SIINFRAS, the possibilities of sharing GI, interoperability of information systems and develop a conceptualization of a new GIS project using GFOSS (Geospatial Freeware Open Source Software). The results show that it is feasible to implement new GFOSS solutions, with new capabilities and working simultaneously in a more synergistic perspective development on the use of GI within the organization, contributing to a more capable fulfillment in several activities related to infrastructures.

Treatable Traits in COPD - A Proposed Approach

    Publication

Other Authors: Ferreira, António Jorge; Guimarães, Miguel; Oliveira, Ana Sofia; Simão, Paula; Sucena, Maria
The well-recognized individual heterogeneity within COPD patients has led to a growing interest in greater personalization in the approach of these patients. Thus, the treatable traits strategy has been proposed as a further step towards precision medicine in the management of chronic airway disease, both in stable phase and acute exacerbations. The aim of this paper is to perform a critical review on the treatable traits strategy and propose a guide to approach COPD patients in the light of this new concept. An innovative stepwise approach is proposed - a multidisciplinary model based on two distinct phases, with the potential to be implemented in both primary care and hospital settings. The first phase is the initial and focused assessment of a selected subset of treatable traits, which should be addressed in all COPD patients in both settings (primary care and hospital). As some patients may present with advanced disease at diagnosis or may progress despite this initial treatment requiring a more specialized assessment, they should progress to a second phase, in which a broader approach is recommended. Beyond stable COPD, we explore how the treatable traits strategy may be applied to reduce the risk of future exacerbations and improve the management of COPD exacerbations. Since many treatable traits have already been related to exacerbation risk, the strategy proposed here represents an opportunity to be proactive. Although it still lacks prospective validation, we believe this is the way forward for the future of the COPD approach.

Enhancing inventory management decisions in a bakery: a case study

    Publication
    by Cardoso, João
Other Authors: Leitão, Paulo; Geraldes, Carla A.S.
This work aims to establish assertive inventory policies for the raw materials in a Portuguese bakery. The demand behaviour of some items was analysed, using the ABC classification, and 14 main items were prioritised. Using Holt-Winters’ additive method, the demand for these items was forecast until the end of 2023. With these forecast data, the paper presents a simulation and comparison between two different inventory policies, the continuous review model and the periodic review model, and also presents an estimate of current inventory costs. As expected, the periodic review model presented higher inventory costs than the continuous review model, due to the higher safety stocks needed. The results of this paper are a starting point for the company to decide what inventory management method fits better.
