L'intercompréhension: d'une approche multilingue à une approche plurilingue

    Publicação
    por Capucho, Filomena
Intercomprehension (IC) is often presented as the result of learning receptive skills in one or more languages, through the transfer of knowledge and strategies previously acquired or developed. However, the different existing approaches do not exploit all the synergies made possible by an inter-linguistic and inter-textual systematic and simultaneous comparison. Therefore, the IC course certainly becomes, by its structure, a multilingual course, but seldom a plurilingual one. This article tries to show how language learning can effectively benefit from the synergies provided by a real plurilingual approach to IC. This statement will be illustrated through examples provided to the learners by a multinational team of researchers, in the context of the Intermar course.

New contexts, new processes, new strategies: the co-construction of meaning in plurilingual interactions

Intercomprehension (IC) can be defined as the process of co-constructing meaning in intercultural/interlinguistic contexts. The latest developments of this notion locate the communicative processes in the context of plurilingual interactions, both in written hybrid forms of communication at distance (chats and forums) and in face-to-face oral conversations (cf. ARAÚJO E SÁ; DE CARLO; MELO-PFEIFER, 2011; BALBONI, 2010, among others). Further research in Applied Linguistics is required so as to support the emergent pedagogical practices aimed at developing the competences of individuals who are now seen simultaneously as IC learners and IC immediate users. This research should be grounded on a multidimensional analysis model of authentic corpora of oral plurilingual interactions in order to provide the analyst with a list of communication strategies and a detailed description of interactional processes that will allow IC specialists to assess the results of actual learning in the context of IC projects and to structure IC learning activities. In this paper, we will present the analysis of an extract from the Bucharest-Cinco corpus that will allow us to identify the strategies developed in the process of co-construction of meaning in multilingual contexts through a close examination of verbal and non-verbal features.

Conflict management in organizations: conceptualization and gender differences

    Publicação
    por Sobral, Sandrina
    Outros Autores: Capucho, Filomena
The way that the conflict has been considered has undergone significant changes with implications for the organizations, which become real arenas for their constitution. In one hand, there is the traditional view, where conflict was synonymous of violence, destruction and irrationality, and, on the other hand, the emergent perspective, where conflict is a synonymous of productivity, fostering creativity and innovation. Communication emerges as a cause and as a solution at the same time, and strategies adjusted to the nature and situation of conflict should be instigated, based on cooperation between the different, naturally distinct parties. Based on a literature review, our objective was to reflect about the "state of the art" in the context of conflict management in organizations, with emphasis on gender differences. The results did not show a style strictly associated with the masculine or feminine gender; however, it is recognized that the use of negotiation strategies and less confrontation by women, as opposed to men. There is little empirical research in Portugal in this domain, and this study may contribute to its progress, by establishing the theoretical bases that support it.

Vamos comunicar?

Organizations have suffered changes in recent years and the way how individuals are viewed has passed from a vision of labor or worker to a collaborative approach. Inside the organization, all individuals naturally communicate with each other, making it impossible not to communicate. The simple presence of an individual already transmits a message to himself or to others. Even when individuals don´t say anything, they transmit that they have no intention to communicate, and this action is already a form of communication. Regarding the definition of communication, we oppose a mechanistic view, which is essentially defined as an individual who sends a message through a channel to another individual (model of Jakobson, 1969), to an orchestra model, in which communication is defined as a creation of interpersonal relations, which are established in social contexts (Goffman, 2002, Watzlawick, 2011). Because of all the changes which have occurred in organizations, the way how employees function inside organizations has suffered modifications, and the way how their motivation areis viewed for the organization success has gained emphasis. In turn, recent studies relate the role of organizational communication on organizational success, which is also related to employee’s motivation. There are several motivational theories, which fall essentially into three large groups: content, process and outcome. Concluding, the organization is formed by individuals who communicate with each other and create relationships. These relationships are essential to motivation, because you can hardly be motivated if you do not feel good in your workplace. The main objective of this work is the presentation of the results from a critical review of literature on the study of a relationship between the internal communication of organizations and motivation of collaborators.

Vamos comunicar?
