It is proposed a simple and inexpensive strategy to determine singlet oxygen (¹O2) quantum yields (ΦΔ) of photosensitizers (PS) in water using beetroot extract containing betacyanin (Bc) and a set of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for excitation. Bc, a cationic natural dye, was obtained by flash chromatography purification from the red beet extract (Beta vulgaris) and employed as a convenient probe for ¹O2 detection. Solutions of Bc and PS were illuminated with an array of LEDs adapted in the cuvette compartment of a commercial spectrophotometer, and the decrease in Bc absorbance was followed as a function of time. Bc photobleaching decreased in de-aerated solution and increased in D2O, indicating the involvement of ¹O2. The observed photobleaching rate constant (k obs) was proportional to the LED intensity, concentration and ΦΔ of the PS. By keeping the light source constant we could estimate the overlap integral (R) between the LED emission and PS absorbance for different PS concentrations. The slope of R versus k obs is the value of the photobleaching rate constant (k), which was shown to be proportional to ΦΔ. Values of ΦΔ obtained by this method were compared with those obtained by measuring NIR (near infrared) emission for a series phenothiazine dyes.

The increase in demand for both fast and inexpensive prototyping of objects, with a certain degree of resilience and durability, is the main reason why 3D printing has become part of the concept of industry 4.0 and it is omnipresent in research facilities and industries around the world. In this work, we describe step-by-step the construction process of a filament winder that can be adapted for many commercially available bench-size polymer extruders. The electronic circuit used to regulate the winding rate, and therefore the thickness of the filament, is completely based on simple open-code microcontrollers such as Arduino Uno. Finally, it is showed that using this system it is possible to obtain printable ABS filaments with a wide range of thicknesses and a margin of error of around 5%.

The water oxidation is the limiting step in the water-splitting process. Given this scenario, the development of new catalysts is essential in this field. The emergent demand is the use of Earth-abundant elements and catalysts with high performance under mild conditions. Because of this, catalysts such as Prussian Blue analogues (PBA) have been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. In addition, working under neutral conditions allows us to take advantage of the modification of conductive polymeric 3D printed electrodes (3DPE) with Prussian Blue. Thus, we described in this work the development of the polymeric 3D printed electrodes modified by cobalt-Prussian Blue and their performance in the water oxidation process. The 3D printed electrodes modified with Co3[Co(CN)6]2 (Co-Co PBA) have a Tafel slope of 343 mV dec−1 while those modified with Co3[Fe(CN)6]2 (Co-Fe PBA) have a Tafel slope of 378 mV dec−1. This means that both catalysts have the same mechanism for the water oxidation process. On the other hand, the overpotential of Co-Co PBA in 3DPE is lower than the value observed by Co-Fe PBA in 3DPE suggesting the best electrocatalytic activity for Co-Co PBA catalyst.

Advances in the use of 3D printing technology have led to the development of new low-cost devices. This technology features high versatility, considering the easy modulation of the materials depending on its objectives and applications. In this sense, we have developed a laboratory-built contact angle measuring device (lab-made). The device was composed by the assembly of 26 3D-printed pieces of different sizes and design printed using acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymer. The device was designed in three main parts. The first part was related to the analysis, with the use of platforms for the sample surfaces positioning. The second part was made to support a micropipette, prepared to add the drop for analysis; and the third for the support of a smartphone, utilized to obtain the images. The device was applied for the measurement of contact angle on different surfaces, demonstrating its versatility and precision of the results. The obtained values are in accordance with others found in the literature. The developed device presented a low-cost (US$ 25.34 per device), easy assembly and operation.

Hydrogen (H2) was one of the first molecules discovered by our society, being the most abundant element in the whole universe. Thus, H2 has gained a lot of attention throughout the years, and it has lots of applications in different areas, especially since it offers ways to decarbonize a lot of sectors, mainly the ones where it has been proved to be very difficult to meaningfully reduce those carbon emissions. Herein, the main aspects of the hydrogen economy and its main applications for energy, transportation and industries are described. These main areas outline how important is H2 for our society highlighting how H2 can make those well-known processes more sustainable and greener. By the end, a brief discussion on these applications with future perspectives is presented.

In this paper a novel supramolecular strategy to improve the efficiency of a voltammetric sensor to determine two biologically relevant molecules (epinephrine (EP) and uric acid (UA)) is presented. The strategy is based on the use of a glassy carbon electrode modified with a copper(II) complex ([Cu(H2dimpy)Cl]PF6) adsorbed on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The [Cu(H2dimpy)Cl]PF6/MWCNT composite-supported electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The electrocatalytic oxidation of EP and UA using the sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. Under optimized conditions, voltammetric peak currents showed a linear response for the EP and UA concentrations in the ranges 0.5-159.2 and 0.2-58.5 µmol L−1, whereas the limits of detection were 0.2 and 0.05 µmol L−1, respectively. The sensor was successfully applied in the selective and simultaneous determination of EP and UA in human urine samples. Thus, our results showed that the supramolecular strategy was successful to build an efficient sensor for simultaneous detection of these molecules in biological samples.

In this study the role of different metal centers (magnesium, zinc and copper) on the enhancement of the hydrophilic character of metallochlorophylls, was evaluated. The solvatochromism as well as the aggregation process for these compounds in water/ethanol mixtures at different volume ratios were evaluated using Fluorescence, and Resonant Light Scattering (RLS) measurements, aiming to characterize the behavior of these compounds. Independently on the studied metallochlorophyll, the presence of at least 60% of water results in a considerable increase in the fluorescence emission, probably a direct consequence of a lower aggregation of these compounds, which is confirmed by the results from RLS measurements. Additionally, the results suggest that magnesium and zinc chlorophyll should be promising phototherapeutic agents for Photodynamic Therapy.
