PUs are considered a public health problem in Portugal and are an indicator of the quality of healthcare provided. Is estimated that 95% of PU are preventable; therefore, priority intervention in several dimensions is necessary. After consulting Cartaxo team indicators, there is a need for intervention in this area. In this sense, a Scoping Review was developed, with the question: What are the nursing intervention strategies to prevent PU in ECCI users? Based on the Health Planning methodology, translating into the community intervention applying the specific skills of the EEECSP, whose general objective was “Preventing the Incidence of Pressure Ulcers in ECCI do Cartaxo Users”. After the implementation of this project, it appears that the process indicators have been reached and exceeded. The result indicators had a very positive evolution, but they need more time to achieve the goals. -

Comparing Large-Diameter Metal-on-Metal and Ceramic-on-Ceramic Total Hip Replacement
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Ramalho, Frédéric; Ferreira, José; Basto, Tiago; Vilela, Carlos; Lima, Fernando et al.Regarding the failure of conventional metal-on-polyethylene total hip replacement (THR) in younger active patients, other bearings have been increasingly used, namely, ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) and large-diameter metal-on-metal (MoM) THR, with some advantages. The aim of the study was to compare the large-diameter MoM with CoC THR. Authors retrospectively followed 42 patients (32 hips) with a mean age of 43 years who had a CoC THR and 22 patients (22 hips) with a mean age of 55 years who had MoM THR. The minimum follow-up was 3 years (mean, 3.9 years). The average Harris hip score (HHS) in large-diameter MoM THR was lower (87.59) compared with CoC THR (88.81). Complications were more frequent in large-diameter MoM THR, with four failures: two infections, one pseudotumor, and one acetabular osteolysis, corresponding to a survival rate at 44 months postsurgery of 81.8 %. In the group of CoC THR, one patient was revised because of a femoral head fracture, two patients reported audible squeaking, and osteolysis was not detected. The survival rate for revision at 47 months postsurgery was 97.6 %. Low rate of failures and absence of osteolysis verified with CoC THR appear to be good predictors of longer survival expected with this bearing. Considering the MoM bearing, the high number of failures is similar to other series described in the literature with these implants. The high risk and severity of complications associated with this type of implant does not appear to justify their use despite their potential advantages -

Serious game for teaching statistics in higher education: storyboard design
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Lopes, Sérgio F.; Leão, Celina Pinto; Soares, Filomena; Carvalho, VitorSerious games can be used as a way to transmit knowledge to the users/students, playing the role of a pedagogical tool in their learning process. Following this idea, a serious game on Statistics is developed for higher education level, promoting and demonstrating the applicability of statistics concepts in day-to-day life and in the decision-making process. The proposed idea is to create a challenging environment (mystery that needs to be solved), where the clues are contextualized in the statistics area through the practice of probability knowledge, confidence intervals and hypotheses tests. According to the student’s answers and choices, the game branches out leading the player to different activities/challenges, guaranteeing that, by the end of the game, the student has a better understanding of the subject. In the present paper, the storyboard and the student competencies are presented and discussed, focusing on the project’s main objectives. -

An adaptive serious game of statistics: project development and mechanisms
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Lopes, Sérgio F.; Soares, Filomena; Carvalho, Vitor; Leão, Celina PintoAn adaptive serious game on Statistics is being under development in the framework of higher education. The main objective of this serious game is to promote and explain the applicability of statistics concepts in day-To-day life and in the decision-making process. The present work stresses the project development and mechanisms including the storyboard and game scenarios. The storyboard is based on a mystery where the clues and answers are defined in terms of statistics knowledge (probabilities, confidence intervals, hypotheses tests). The game scenarios were developed using open source tools and using as reference scenario the university campus. By doing this, the student/player are integrated in a "familiar" environment. It is expected to increase the students' proficiency on Statistics. -

Vitamin K Epoxide Reductase Complex (VKORC1) Electrochemical Genosensors: Towards the Identification of 1639 G>A Genetic Polymorphism
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Morais, Stephanie L.; Carvalho, Renato; Magalhães, Júlia M. C. S.; Domingues, Valentina F.; Delerue-Matos, Cristina et al.Anticoagulants, including warfarin, are often administered to patients who are exhibiting early symptoms of thromboembolic episodes or who have already experienced such episodes. However, warfarin has a limited therapeutic index and might cause bleeding and other clinical problems. Warfarin inhibits the vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1), an enzyme essential for activating vitamin K, in the coagulation cascade. Genetic factors, such as polymorphisms, can change the natural function of VKORC1, causing variations in the medication reaction among individuals. Hence, before prescribing warfarin, the patient’s genetic profile should also be considered. In this study, an electrochemical genosensor capable of detecting the VKORC1 1639 G>A polymorphism was designed and optimized. This analytical approach detects the electric current obtained during the hybridization reaction between two 52 base pair complementary oligonucleotide sequences. Investigating public bioinformatic platforms, two DNA sequences with the A and G single-nucleotide variants were selected and designed. The experimental protocol of the genosensor implied the formation of a bilayer composed of a thiolate DNA and an alkanethiol immobilized onto gold electrodes, as well as the formation of a DNA duplex using a sandwich-format hybridization reaction through a fluorescein labelled DNA signalling probe and the enzymatic amplification of the electrochemical signal, detected by chronoamperometry. A detection limit of 20 pM and a linear range of 0.05–1.00 nM was obtained. A clear differentiation between A/A, G/A and G/G genotypes in biological samples was successfully identified by his novel device. -

Warfarin pharmacogenomics: Designing electrochemical DNA-based sensors to detect CYP2C9*2 gene variation
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Morais, Stephanie L.; Pereira, Eduarda; Magalhães, Júlia M. C. S.; Domingues, Valentina F.; Ferreira-Fernandes, Hygor et al.The CYP2C9 enzyme is involved in the metabolism of warfarin. The CYP2C9 gene harbors several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including CYP2C9*2 (rs1799853), which is known to affect warfarin’s therapeutic response. So, it is important to develop analytical tools capable of genotyping these SNPs to adjust warfarin’s therapeutic outcomes. In this work, an electrochemical DNA-based sensor was constructed and optimized for the detection of the CYP2C9*2 polymorphism. Methods: Using bioinformatic database platforms, two 71 base pair DNA target probes with the polymorphic variants A and G were chosen and designed. A DNA-based sensor was composed by mercaptohexanol and the CYP2C9*2 DNA capture probe in a self-assembled monolayer connected to screen-printed gold electrodes. Two independent hybridization events of the CYP2C9*2 allele were designed using complementary fluorescein-labeled DNA signaling to improve selectivity and avoid secondary structures. Three human samples with the homozygous variant (G/G) and non-variant (A/A) and heterozygous (G/A) genotypes were amplified by PCR and then applied to the developed genosensor. Results: Chronoamperometry measurements were performed for both polymorphic probes. A calibration curve in the 0.25 to 2.50 nM (LOD of 13 pM) and another in the 0.15 to 5.00 nM range (LOD of 22.6 pM) were obtained for the homozygous non-variant and variant probes, respectively. This innovative tool was capable of identifying the hybridization reaction between two complementary strands of immobilized DNA, representing a genotyping alternative to the classical PCR methodology. Conclusions: The developed electrochemical DNA-based sensor was able to discriminate two synthetic SNP target sequences (Target-A and Target-G) and detect, with specificity, the three patients’ genotypes (G/G, G/A, and A/A). This tool is therefore a promising, sensitive, and cost-effective analytical way to determine and discriminate an individual’s genotype and predict the appropriate warfarin dose. -

The changes in classical and nonlinear parameters after a maximal bout to elicit fatigue in competitive swimming
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOther Authors: Simin, Chen; Morais, Jorge; Costa, Mário; Batalha, NunoThe aim was to assess the effect of fatigue on linear and nonlinear parameters in swimming. Twenty-four fitness-oriented swimmers performed a maximal bout of 100m at front-crawl to elicit fatigue. Before (pre-) and immediately after (post-test) the bout, participants swam an all- out 25m to derive the speed fluctuation (dv), approximate entropy (ApEn) and fractal dimension (FD) from the speed-time series collected by a speedo-meter. Swim speed was 10.85% slower in the post-test than in the pre-test (p<0.001, η2=0.72). There was an effect of the fatigue on the dv with a moderate effect size. The dv increased shifting the 95CI band from 0.116-0.134 to 0.140- 0.161. The ApEn showed non-significant variations between the pre- and post-test having the 95CI of pre- and post-test overlapped (pre: 0.659-0.700; post: 0.641-0.682). The FD showed as well a significant variation (the 95CI moved from 1.954-1.965 to 1.933-1.951). It can be concluded that in swimming there are changes in classical and nonlinear parameters under fatigue. -

Smart sport equipment: reshaping the sports landscape
Publicationby Barbosa, TiagoOrigin: MotricidadeWe are witnesses of “Industry 4.0”, the 4th industrial revolution. In just a few years, we became a highly analytical society where at any given time massive datasets are produced, collected and analysed. Cities and countries have the vision of becoming smart societies, optimising the performance and wellbeing of their citizens. One can easily track and log all daily activities. The biggest challenge, though, is the management of an overwhelming amount of data. Sports industry is no different. Sports is a reflection of the society. Athletes (of any level, from recreational all the way up to world-ranked), patients and practitioners (Physical Education teachers, coaches, analysts, physicians, therapists, etc.) are keen to track-down analytical parameters as well. Innovation and technology can help preventing and minimising sports injuries, enhancing sports technique or aid assessing the performance delivered. The industry of smart sport equipment is growing up at a very fast pace. The number of wearable devices worldwide is expected to increase from 325 million in 2016 to over 830 million in 2020. The smart wearables for sports and fitness generated US$3.5 billion in 2014 (Market Wired, 2016). The forecast is that smart garments sector will worth about US$34 billion by 2020 (Lamkin, 2016). The smart textiles and smart fabrics market is expected to reach US$9.3 billion by 2024 (Grand View Research, 2015). These products can cater a wide range of consumers. The ones who are looking forward to more or less fashionable sportswear, sports accessories, information technology & electronics consumers, etc. The common denominator among these consumers is being innovation-driven. There are commercially available smart wearables (or gear) to be used in all main sports, including aquatics, athletics, boating, cycling, gymnastics, invasion games, net sports, winter sports, and much more. Sports equipment and clothing can be instrumented with sensors, providing real-time analytical details on the subject’s behaviour and performance. Data can be logged and analysed later on. Alternatively, it can be transmitted real-time to portable terminals (smartphones, tablets, smartwatches or laptops) and displayed immediately. With this outlook as backdrop, there is an opportunity for sports sciences to play a key-role in the reshape of the sports landscape. Sports researchers can help on the design and validation of smart sport equipment, and be involved as end-users of these products. As end-users, sport researchers will not be spending so much time collecting and handling data. Rather, the job scope will shift more into analysis, interpretation and application of the findings. This will enable to provide swift real-time feedback to patients, athletes, coaches and others stakeholders in the sports fraternity. Data can be uploaded to a cloud and be available everywhere at any given time from any device. The design, and validation of new cutting-edge devices, of innovative solutions, are a great opportunity to bridge academia with industry. To carry out these projects is paramount to have interdisciplinary research teams with a wide array of skills, different expertise and backgrounds. The project will not end by the publication of a series of research papers. This should be followed-up by obtaining a patent. Also, it can help highly-trained graduates to join the workforce and even to foster the setup of start-ups. Several universities, mostly in Asia and Europe (notably the United Kingdom), are now offering courses in “Sports Technology” to undergraduate students. Some tertiary institutions, are offering also undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in this field. The curricula of such programmes touch topics such as innovation, design, and sports engineering with a strong emphasis in sport sciences. Sports technology is an exciting, cutting-edge and reasonable new field. Moreover, it is possible to set a pathway between academia (research and teaching) and industry (services). Ultimately, it is deemed to provide an added economical return to society, which one should not disregard.
