The magnetocaloric effect of a given material is typically assessed through indirect estimates of the isothermal magnetic entropy change, ΔSM. While estimating the adiabatic temperature difference, ΔTad, is more relevant from the standpoint of refrigeration device engineering, this requires specialized experimental setups. We here present an approach to directly measure ΔTad through time-dependent magnetometry in a commercial superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) device. We use as reference material gadolinium under a 20-kOe field change, and compare our results with those of the literature. Under nonadiabatic experimental conditions, a remarkably similar ΔTad(T) curve profile is obtained; however, its peak amplitude is underestimated. With a simple compensation methodology we are able to further approximate the profile of the ΔTad(T) curve obtaining the peak amplitude, the maximizing temperature, and the FWHM within relative errors of -4%, -0.7%, and 11%, respectively. Our reported approach makes the measurement of both ΔSM(T) and ΔTad(T) possible with a single instrument, enabling accelerated progress towards new, competitive, and industry-ready materials.

Aspectos Neuroquímicos da Doença de Alzheimer

    Publication
    by Almeida, R
    Other Authors: Gonçalves, M

    Publication
    by Almeida, R
    Other Authors: Borja Santos, M

    Publication
    by Almeida, R
Other Authors: Gonçalves, M; Pinto Viana; Pimenta, M; Monteiro, J; Costa Marques et al.

    Publication
    by Almeida, R
Other Authors: Gonçalves, M; Pinto Viana, J; Cabral Beirão, J

Fractional differential equations with dependence on the Caputo-Katugampola derivative

    Publication
    by Almeida, R.
    Other Authors: Malinowska, A. B.; Odzijewicz, T.
In this paper we present a new type of fractional operator, the Caputo–Katugampola derivative. The Caputo and the Caputo–Hadamard fractional derivatives are special cases of this new operator. An existence and uniqueness theorem for a fractional Cauchy type problem, with dependence on the Caputo–Katugampola derivative, is proven. A decomposition formula for the Caputo–Katugampola derivative is obtained. This formula allows us to provide a simple numerical procedure to solve the fractional differential equation.

Hilfer-type synchronization in fractional neural networks with bounded time variable delays

    Publication
    by Almeida, R.
    Other Authors: Rodrigues, M. M.; Vieira, N.
This paper investigates the global asymptotic synchronization of a class of delayed neural networks governed by Hilfer-type fractional differential equations with a generalised kernel. The model incorporates time-dependent coefficients and activation functions, as well as external forcing terms involving the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function. A controller design based on output coupling and delay-dependent feedback is proposed. Using Lyapunov-like functions align with two-parameter Mittag-Leffler functions, we derive sufficient conditions for global synchronization. Numerical examples with time-varying coefficients and delays illustrate the scope and verify the assumptions.

3-(Methoxy)-1,2-benzisothiazole 1,1-dioxide, a pseudosaccharyl ether, was long ago known to undergo a thermal Chapman-like [1,3′]-isomerization to the corresponding N-methyl pseudosaccharin at temperatures above its melting point (ca. 184 °C) [Hettler H., Tetrahedron Lett.1968, 15, 1793]. In the present study, it is shown that this rearrangement can also take place in the solid state, at temperatures as low as 150 °C. This was the first observation of a Chapman-like [1,3′]-isomerization in pseudosaccharyl ethers in the solid state. The study has been carried out by a multidisciplinary approach using temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized light thermomicroscopy, complemented by theoretical methods.
