Texture Analysis of T1-weighted Turbo Spin-Echo MRI for the Diagnosis and Follow-up of Collagen VI-related Myopathy
Publicationby Rodrigues, RafaelOther Authors: Gómez-García de La Banda, Marta; Tordjman, Mickael; Gómez-Andrés, David; Quijano-Roy, Susana; Carlier, Robert-Yves et al.Origin: uBibliorumMuscle texture analysis in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has revealed a good correlation with typical histological changes resulting from neuromuscular disorders. In this research, we assess the effectiveness of several features in describing intramuscular texture alterations in cases of Collagen VI-related myopathy. A T1-weighted Turbo Spin-Echo MRI dataset was used (Nsubj = 26), consisting of thigh scans from subjects diagnosed with Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy or Bethlem Myopathy, with different severity levels, as well as healthy subjects. A total of 355 texture features were studied, including attributes derived from the Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix, the Run-Length Matrix, Wavelet and Gabor filters. The extracted features were ranked using the Support Vector Machine Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithm with Correlation Bias Reduction, prior to cross-validated classification with a Gaussian kernel SVM. -

Analysis of eyewitness testimony using electroencephalogram signals
Publicationby Mendes, Bruno Miguel VilelaThe application of Brain Computer Interfaces techniques to vital crime witnesses could and probably will be a key feature in the justice system. Features from the electroencephalogram signals were extracted with information detailing their domain (time or frequency), and their spacial scalp and time placement. For both domains, two different classification pipelines were applied in order to select the most relevant features: one to rank and select the top features and another to recursively eliminate the least relevant feature. The Support Vector Machine (linear and non-linear) is the classification model included in the pipeline. Further observations on the selected features by the applied techniques were performed and discussed in relation to the available knowledge about face recognition. The present work provides an experimental study on the electroencephalogram signals acquired from an experiment in which an array of subjects were asked to identify both culprit and distractor being the culprit related to a previously shown crime scene video. -

Application of SVM-RFE on EEG signals for detecting the most relevant scalp regions linked to affective valence processing
Publicationby Hidalgo-Muñoz, A. R.Other Authors: López Pérez, Miriam; Santos, I. M.; Pereira, A. T.; Vázquez-Marrufo, M.; Galvao-Carmona, A. et al.In this work, event related potentials (ERPs) induced by visual stimuli categorized with different value of affective valence are studied. EEG signals are recorded during visualization of selected pictures belonging to International Affective Picture System (IAPS). A Morlet wavelet filter is used to transform the EEG input space to a topography-time–frequency feature space. Support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) is applied for detecting scalp spectral dynamics of interest (SSDOIs) in this feature space, allowing to identify the most relevant time intervals, frequency bands and EEG channels. This feature selection method has proven to outperform the classical t-test in the discrimination of brain cortex regions involved in affective valence processing. Furthermore, the presented combination of feature extraction and selection techniques can be applied as an alternative in other different clinical applications. -

Spectral turbulence measuring as feature extraction method from EEG on affective computing
Publicationby Hidalgo-Muñoz, A. R.Other Authors: López, M. M.; Pereira, A. T.; Santos, I. M.; Tomé, A. M.In biomedical and psychological applications dealing with EEG, a suitable selection of the most relevant electrodes is useful for lightening the data acquisition and facilitating the signal processing. Therefore,an efficient method for extracting and selecting features from EEG channels is desirable. Classification methods are more and more applied for obtaining important conclusions from diverse psychological processes, and specifically for emotional processing. In this work, an original and straightforward method, inspired by the spectral turbulence (ST) measure from electrocardiogram and the support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithm, is proposed for classifying EEG signals. The goal of this study is to introduce the ST concept in applications of artificial intelligence related to cognitive processes and to determine the best EEG channels for distinguishing between two different experimental conditions. By means of this method, the left temporal region of the brain has revealed to be greatly involved in the affective valence processing elicited by visual stimuli.
