Functionalization and photocuring of an L-lactic acid macromer for biomedical applications
Publicaçãopor Marques, DinaOutros Autores: Santos, João; Ferreira, Paula; Correia, Tiago R.; Correia, Ilídio Joaquim Sobreira; Gil, Maria et al.Origem: uBibliorumL-lactic acid was the starting material for obtaining bioahesives. Reaction with 1,4-butanediol provided a telechelic lactic acid prepolymer with hydroxyl end groups further functionalized with 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate. Films were produced upon UV irradiation, 2 min, after addition of Irgacure 2959. This was a solvent and catalyst free process. Thermal characterization of films confirmed stability at physiological temperature, enabling photocuring. Adhesion properties were assessed with good results. In vitro degradation tests showed moderate hydrolytic instability dependent on thickness. SEM images revealed a uniform and compact structure. Thrombosis tests confirmed the materials’ thrombogenicity while biocompatibility experiments showed fibroblast viability and antimicrobial behavior. -

Photocurable Polymeric Blends for Surgical Application
Publicaçãopor Cernadas, TeresaOutros Autores: Santos, Marta; Miguel, Sónia P.; Correia, I.J.; Alves, Patrícia; Ferreira, PaulaOrigem: uBibliorumThe preparation of photocrosslinkable bioadhesives synthesized from oligomers of lactic acid and polycaprolactone (PCL), both functionalized with 2-isocyanoethyl acrylate (AOI), were studied. The obtained modified macromers of LA-AOI (mLA) and PCL-AOI (mCL) were chemically characterized by 1H NMR and used to formulate polymeric blends with different mass proportions, 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1, respectively. Subsequently, the produced blends were crosslinked, considering two UV irradiation times: 30 and 120 s. After their production, the thermal and mechanical properties of bioadhesives were assessed, where upon the rheology, gel content, hydrolytic degradation and dynamic contact angles were determined. Furthermore, the cytotoxic profile of bioadhesives was evaluated in contact with human dermal fibroblasts cells, whereas their antibacterial effect was studied monitoring Escherichia coli and S. aureus growth. Overall, flexible and resistant films were obtained, presenting promising features to be used as surgical bioadhesives. -

Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide blended in polyurethane acrylate photocurable solid polymer electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries
Publicaçãopor Mendes-Felipe, CristianOutros Autores: Barbosa, J. C.; Gonçalves, Renato Ferreira; Miranda, D.; Costa, Carlos Miguel Silva; Vilas-Vilela, J. L. et al.The increased demand of electronic devices promotes the development of advanced and more efficient energy storage devices, such as batteries. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most studied battery systems due to their high performance. Among the different battery components, the separator allows the control of lithium ion diffusion between the electrodes. To overcome some drawbacks of liquid electrolytes, including safety and environmental issues, solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are being developed. In this work, a UV photocurable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) resin has been blended with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) up to 30 wt% LiTFSI content to reach a maximum ionic conductivity of 0.0032 mS/cm at room temperature and 0.09 mS/cm at 100 ºC. Those values allowed applying the developed materials as photocurable SPE in Swagelok type Li/C-LiFePO4 half-cells, reaching a battery discharge capacity value of 139 mAh.g -1 at C/30 rate. Those results, together with the theoretical studies of the discharge capacity at different C-rates and temperatures for batteries with LiTFSI/PUA SPE demonstrate the suitability of the developed photocurable SPE for LIB applications.
