Optimum size in grid soil sampling for variable rate application in site-specific management
Publicationby Nanni, Marcos RafaelOther Authors: Povh, Fabrício Pinheiro; Demattê, José Alexandre Melo; Oliveira, Roney Berti de; Chicati, Marcelo Luiz; Cezar, EversonOrigin: OasisbrThe importance of understanding spatial variability of soils is connected to crop management planning. This understanding makes it possible to treat soil not as a uniform, but a variable entity, and it enables site-specific management to increase production efficiency, which is the target of precision agriculture. Questions remain as the optimum soil sampling interval needed to make site-specific fertilizer recommendations in Brazil. The objectives of this study were: i) to evaluate the spatial variability of the main attributes that influence fertilization recommendations, using georeferenced soil samples arranged in grid patterns of different resolutions; ii) to compare the spatial maps generated with those obtained with the standard sampling of 1 sample ha-1, in order to verify the appropriateness of the spatial resolution. The attributes evaluated were phosphorus (P), potassium (K), organic matter (OM), base saturation (V%) and clay. Soil samples were collected in a 100 × 100 m georeferenced grid. Thinning was performed in order to create a grid with one sample every 2.07, 2.88, 3.75 and 7.20 ha. Geostatistical techniques, such as semivariogram and interpolation using kriging, were used to analyze the attributes at the different grid resolutions. This analysis was performed with the Vesper software package. The maps created by this method were compared using the kappa statistics. Additionally, correlation graphs were drawn by plotting the observed values against the estimated values using cross-validation. P, K and V%, a finer sampling resolution than the one using 1 sample ha-1 is required, while for OM and clay coarser resolutions of one sample every two and three hectares, respectively, may be acceptable. -

Evaluation of a Complementary Treatment Planning System within Adaptive Radiotherapy
Publicationby Pires, Maria Rita DiasCurrently, Treatment Planning Systems (TPS) are essential software tools in radiotherapy. They simulate dose distributions delivered by the linear accelerator during patient treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to select a TPS with the necessary characteristics and ensure that the provided information accurately represents the actual performance of the linear accelerator. The Ethos Treatment Management (ETM) is a TPS that focuses on adaptive radiotherapy and is one of the systems available at the University Medical Center Mannheim. However,ETM provides a reduced range of options for developing a plan on a TPS. Consequently, to enhance the performance of the system and the workflow around Quality Assurance(QA), the implementation of a complementary TPS was considered. The objective of this dissertation is to evaluate Eclipse as a complementary tool for ETM,combining dosimetric analysis and workflow evaluation to comprehensively assess Eclipse in the context of adaptive radiotherapy. Comparative validation will be conducted between Eclipse, ETM, measurement data, and a secondary dose calculation engine, utilizing dose simulations such as three-dimensional dose distributions. To enhance the robustness of the analysis, various phantoms were utilized, and QA fields and patient plans were used to map the adaptive treatment plans. In addition to the dosimetric analysis, the treatment planning workflow was examined to identify where Eclipse should be integrated. This includes evaluating its role in treatment planning, quality assurance, offline review, and adaptive planning verification.Considering both dosimetric accuracy and workflow efficiency, Eclipse can be considered a good complement to ETM, but it still requires fine-tuning before implementation. -

Publicationby Duque, Matilde VieiraThe nonparametric estimation of probability density functions has been widely studied in recent decades, with emphasis on the kernel estimator method. The kernel estimator depends fundamentally on two parameters: the kernel, denoted by K, and bandwidth, represented by h. However, the choice of bandwidth is particularly relevant to the performance of the estimator and will therefore be the main aspect of our approach. In the literature, different methods for bandwidth selection stand out, including the plug-in method, originally proposed by Woodroofe, and the cross-validation method, developed by Rudemo and Bowman. In this dissertation, we will focus on the cross-validation method and a variant of this method, called bootstrap aggregation or bagging cross-validation (Bagging). This variant introduced by Hall and Robinson presents small modifications with the aim of improving the choice of the bandwidth parameter and, consequently, the estimation performance. Initially, definitions and fundamental properties of nonparametric estimation are presented, with emphasis on the kernel estimator and the asymptotically optimal choice of the bandwidth. Then, the cross-validation method and the Bagging method are addressed, as well as the binned technique, used to improve the computational efficiency in the implementation of the analyzed methods. Subsequently, a simulation study is carried out in which the different methods of bandwidth selection are compared, allowing the effectiveness of the proposed approaches to be evaluated. The results indicate that, in most of the cases analyzed, the Bagging method does not present significant advantages over the cross-validation method. Finally, a practical example of the application of the methods discussed is presented, using a set of observations corresponding to the logarithmic returns of the shares of the companies META, Johnson & Johnson and Walmart, belonging to the S&P500 index. It should be noted that the objective of this example is not to evaluate the performance of the bandwidth selection methods, but rather to illustrate their application in estimating the probability density. -

Credit scoring analysis
Publicationby Puertas Medina, RosaOther Authors: Selva, Maria Luisa MartíOrigin: OasisbrThe problem of unpaid bank debts is becoming increasingly important in developed countries. Many empirical works are being published in an attempt to find a model capable of determining as accurately as possible whether an individual requesting a loan will be able to pay it back. This paper analyses the predicting capability of one non-parametric and two parametric models. As regards the former, the often-overlooked problem of overlearning is also tackled using the cross-validation technique. Furthermore, a three-level grading of loan applications is proposed depending on their likely performance: grant, refuse, or doubtful hence subject to manual consideration by bank staff. -
