Between Lines and Dots in Machado de Assis’s Drama: His Time in our Times

    Publication
    by Sá, Jussara Bittencourt de
    Origin: Oasisbr
The proposal of this text is to analyze the conceptions of nation and nationality in Brazilian plays of the 19th century, especially the one called Quase Ministro (Almost Minister) by Machado de Assis. In short, evidence is sought to demonstrate that Machado's theater has fulfilled an essential role in the representation/constitution of the Nation, placing on the stage different conceptions of nationality, through the creation of favorable surroundings, speeches, and representations of the social types that formed the Brazilian society of that time.

The Photographic Lens as Cultural Critique: Writings of the Body in Cicatriz, by Rosangela Rennó

    Publication
    by Barberena, Ricardo Araújo
    Origin: Oasisbr
Rosangela Rennó’s photographic exhibition Cicatriz (Scar) (1996) introduces a disturbing search into the House of Detention’s photographic collection, in São Paulo. The institutional files looks like a stagnant combination of inertia and both official and group stigma until the moment when Rennó seeks the affection, the poetry, the sign’s revolt and resistance that can denounce a muted Other. The photograph, then, reveal the cultural tissue which previously could not be named: the previously misty image begins to work in an area of repression, open in its distressing condition that erases the boundaries considered rational and homogeneous. A harrowing set of prisoner’s tattoos is presented and demonstrate the painful writings of a subordinate Self. From the deconsecration of the photographic mirror a land is opened for the reading of epithelial texts healed as discourses anointed in marginal flesh.

Futebol, Raça e Nação em Portugal

    Publication

    Publication
    by Merlini, Dea
This project aims to build a counterpoint between Antropofagia and Afro-Brazilian literature, linking them respectively with the imaginaries of mestizaje and black consciousness, in order to interrogate the processes of construction and negotiation of an idea of the Brazilian nation. The metaphor of “anthropophagy”, coined by Oswald de Andrade to symbolise the process of appropriation of the coloniser's culture by the colonised, was revolutionary for having placed a heterogeneous, fluid and anti-Cartesian identity as the core of Brazilian nationality. This seemed to deconstruct a Eurocentric ideal of the nation, in which it was conceived as fixed and homogeneous, but at the same time opened up possibilities for conceptualising very refined mechanisms of governing differences. Today, the anthropophagic imaginary finds possibilities of questioning and displacement within the literature produced by writers of African descent. The latter refer to forms of strategic essentialism, resuming the discussion on Brazilian identity from the perspective of racially and ethnically marginalized subjects within society as well as in the national narrative.

    Publication
    by Silva, Luiz Geraldo
    Origin: Oasisbr

    Origin: Oasisbr
Abstract Aim: This study contextualizes the establishment of Montes Claros Sports Square, in Minas Gerais, through the look of Gazeta do Norte newspaper, and its alignment with a nation project to be established by the government of Getúlio Vargas, who took office in 1930. He formulated actions for a ‘national reconstruction’ project, for which, from society, it was necessary to emerge both physically and morally healthy subjects, fundamental conditions for the construction of the aforementioned new nation, and which could reach the Brazilians in the hinterlands. Thus, this study aimed to narrate a history of the construction of Montes Claros Sports Square, from the end of the 1930s until 1945, during Getúlio Vargas’ first term as President of the Republic, with Benedito Valadares as Governor of Minas Gerais. Methods: The study was based on the extensive collection of data researched in Gazeta do Norte newspaper. Results: Symbol of a modern project for sports, the Sports Square was announced by the governor during his visit to the city, in January 1939, and established on the Oswaldo Cruz meadow. It is possible to verify that, notably, in the 15 years of Getúlio Vargas’ first term, the practice of sports is developed and consolidates itself as an ‘actor’ in the social space of Montes Claros. Conclusion: In this city, in addition to the construction of the Sports Square, it was necessary to educate and inform the individuals. It can be said that the newspaper Gazeta do Norte firmly contributed to Vargas’ nation project.

    Publication
    by Ferreira,Bernardo
    Origin: Oasisbr
This article aims to analyze key aspects of Brazil's historical formation as elaborated by Caio Prado Jr. in his main works on Brazilian history, Evolução Política do Brasil (1933), The Colonial Background of Modern Brazil (published in Portuguese in 1942; first English edition in 1967), and História Econômica do Brasil (1945). The author analyzes how Caio Prado Jr. engages in a dialogue with Marxist thought in his approach to the "revolution of independence" as a watershed in the historical development of Brazilian society.

The Jornal Nacional news report and Dilma Rousseff's destitution rite

    Publication
by Rocha, Maria Eduarda da Mota
    Origin: Oasisbr
Sociology is currently concerned with the rites of institution through which individuals become the custodians of state power (Bourdieu, 2014). But the coup of 2016 in Brazil offers a rare opportunity to analyze a rite of dismissal in which different instances of state power converged on the purpose of emptying the symbolic capital of the elected President of the Republic. But if the institutional place of the coup was the Plenary of the two houses of Congress, its main symbolic niche was the Jornal Nacional. Following the decisive steps in this  long process, we analyzed five editions of the JN, selected according to the relevance for the purpose of the research: The March 4, day of the coercive conduction of Lula determined by Sérgio Moro; The March 16, when it was announced the recording of a telephone conversation between Dilma and Lula regarding the appointment of the latter as Minister of the Civil House; The April 18, the date of the vote in the Chamber of Deputies that authorized the opening of the process for the removal of the President; The May 12, the day of the dismissal of Dilma and the inauguration of Temer; And the August 31, when the Senate approved the definitive dismissal of Dilma. For this purpose, we use content analysis (Bardin, 2009) seeking to demonstrate how the social monopoly of the idea of "nation" is constituted today, since one of the poles of the dispute is usually presented as a bulwark of "national interest " while in the opposite side, actors are portrayed by the JN as particularists, linked to partisan and criminal interests.

Agrarian roots, sertão, and rural studies: in honor of Professor Eli Napoleão de Lima (CPDA/UFRRJ)

    Publication
    by Meneses, Valdênio Freitas
    Origin: Oasisbr
The social sciences and humanities contains some dilemmas that reflect empirical and theoretical problems; one such challenge is interdisciplinarity and the place of subjectivity. This article discusses these issues while also serving as a tribute to Eli Napoleão de Lima, a professor and researcher whose work centered around Brazil’s sertão backlands, the nation and region, Amazon rainforest, and literature about the countryside. She pursued her work with great passion, precisely at the conflicting intersection of the social sciences, history, and literature. Her class entitled “Agrarian Roots of Social Formation in Brazil” made important impressions on generations of young social scientists. In this specific interdisciplinary place of knowledge, Professor Napoleão de Lima helped to make the CPDA/UFRRJ the main center for research on social and rural studies in Brazil.
