The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of graphite platelets used as matrix epoxy polymer reinforcement in the sliding zeciprocating wear performance of carbon fibre composites. First, epoxy reinforced composites with different amounts of graphite in weight were produced (0, 7.5, 11.5 and 30 wt %) to ascertain the optimal composition regarding wear resistance. Additionally, carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites were produced, with and without the addition of 7.5 wt% graphite platelets to the polymer matrix, and its wear resistance was also evaluated. The laminated carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites were produced through vacuum assisted hand lay-up method. Reciprocating sphere-on-plate wear tests, using Ø 6mm spheres of AISI52100 steel as counter-body, were performed during 6 h at room temperature. The tests were carried out using an applied normal load of 4 N, 2 Hz of frequency and 8mm stroke per cycle. At the end of the tests, the wear losses were estimated through integration of cross-section wear track profiles and the worn surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The coefficient of friction was accessed during testing. The results showed that the lowest specific wear rate of the polymer composites without carbon fibre was obtained with the insertion of 7.5 wt% of graphite platelets and that increase in the graphite fraction leads to higher material loss as a result of increased fatigue surface. Furthermore, the addition of 7.5 wt% graphite platelets to the epoxy matrix of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites leads to enhance its wear resistance. The reinforced matrix supports and protects the fibres reducing fibre failure and, consequently, wear.

Abstract The purpose of this study was the development of a low-cost ceramic tubular membrane, using inexpensive materials, namely natural clay, and graphite as a porogenic agent. Such a low-cost membrane can be used as filters or porous supports for the preparation of multilayer ceramic membranes. Extrusion was used as a shape-forming method for this purpose. Graphite was selected as a porogenic additive. Raw materials were physicochemically and morphologically characterized. A comparative study of the influence of porogen content on membrane characteristics was carried out. Finally a graphite addition of 15 wt% and 850 °C as the sintering temperature were chosen. The obtained membrane had 41 vol% of porosity, diametral compression strength of 4 MPa, and relatively good corrosion resistance in basic and acid conditions. The performance of the membrane support was evaluated for diesel-in-water emulsion depuration as a function of pressure. Filtration test using 15% of porogen sample led to turbidity rejection factor of 95%. Therefore, it was considered that this membrane can be suitable for diesel/water emulsion treatment.

The properties of poly(4-aminophenol) modified graphite electrode as material for the immobilization of acetylcholinesterase were investigated by the Cyclic Voltammetry, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The polymer was deposited on graphite electrode surface by the oxidation of 4-aminophenol and then acetylcholinesterase was immobilized on the surface of the electrode. The biosensor coupled in the continuous flow system was employed for the detection of dichlorvos. The detection and quantification limits were 0.8 and 2.4 μmol L-1 dichlorvos, respectively. Graphite electrodes modified with the poly(4-aminophenol) showed to be an efficient and promising material for immobilization of acetylcholinesterase enzyme. The proposed method requires simple parts which are easy to build, involves only one biosensor and the potentiometric detection is simple.

A low-cost electrochemical method was developed for the determination of trace-level of methyl parathion (MP) based on the properties of graphite-modified basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (graphite-bppg). A combination of graphite-bppg with square-wave voltammetric (SWV) analysis resulted in an original, sensitive and selective electrochemical method for determination of MP pesticide in drinking water. The electrode was constructed and the electrochemical behavior of MP was studied. Immobilization is achieved via film modification from dispersing graphite powder in deionized water and through pipeting a small volume onto the electrode surface allowing the solvent to volatilize. The strong affinity of the graphite modifier for the phosphorous group of the MP allowed the deposition of a significant amount of MP in less than 60 seconds. The cyclic voltammetric results indicate that the graphite-bppg electrode can enhance sensitivity in current intensity towards the quasi-reversible redox peaks of the products of the cathodic reduction of the nitro group at negative potential (peak I = 0.077 V and peak II = -0.062 V) and that the cathodic irreversible peak (peak III = -0.586 V) in comparison with bare bppg electrode and is also adsorption controlled process. Under optimized conditions, the concentration range and detection limit for MP pesticide are respectively 79.0 to 263.3 μmol L-1 and 3.00 μmol L-1. The proposed method was successfully applied to MP determination in drinking water and the performance of this electrochemical sensor has been evaluated in terms of analytical figures of merit.

The possibility of using a graphite silicone-rubber composite electrode (GSR) in a differential pulse voltammetric(DPV) procedure for rutin (vitamin P) determination is described. Cyclic voltammograms of rutin presented a reversible pair of oxidation/reduction peaks respectively at 0.411 and 0.390 V (vs. SCE) at the GSR surface in Britton-Robinson(B-R) buffer solution pH 4.0. In DPV after optimization of conditions, an oxidation peak at 0.370 V (vs. SCE) was used to quantitative determination of rutin in B-R buffer solution pH 4.0. In this case a linear dynamic range of 5.0×10-8 to 50.0×10-8 mol L-1 was observed with a detection limit of 1.8×10-8 mol L-1 for the analyte. Recoveries from 94 to 113% were observed. The electrode surface was renewed by polishing after each determination, with a repeatability of 1.09 ± 0.06 µA (n = 10) peak current. Rutin was determined in a pharmaceutical formulation using the proposed electrode and the results agreed with those from an official method within 95% confidence level.

This work aimed to produce graphene oxide with few graphene layers, a low number of defects, good conductivity and reasonable amount of oxygen, adequate for use as filler in polymeric composites. Two starting materials were evaluated: expanded graphite and graphite flakes. The method of oxidation used was the Staudenmaier one, which was tested over different lengths of time. No appreciable differences were found among the oxidation times and so the lowest oxidation time (24 h) was chosen as the most adequate. An investigation was also conducted into suitable temperatures for the reduction of graphite oxide. A temperature of 1000 ºC gave the best results, allowing a good quality material with few defects to be obtained. The reduction was also evaluated under inert and normal atmosphere. The best results were obtained when the least modified material, e. g., graphite flakes, was used as a starting material, oxidized for 24h and reduced at 1000 ºC for 30 s in a quartz ampoule under a normal atmosphere.

Effects of addition of iron (Fe) filings to green moulding sand on the microstructure of grey cast iron

    Publication
    by Adedayo,Adeleke Victor
    Origin: Oasisbr
Cast irons are important engineering materials, which possess a wide range of attractive properties. Their properties are significantly dependent on the microstructure of the cast, cast iron components. A way of controlling the microstructure of cast iron is through the control of cooling rates during solidification. To control cooling rate mould properties are important. This paper presents the report of a study of the effects of additions of iron filings to green moulding sand on the microstructure of grey cast iron. Five sand samples were prepared with different Fe content ranging from 1 wt% to 5 wt%. A control sand sample, which had no iron content, was also prepared. The properties of the sand samples were tested and used to cast some grey cast iron samples whose microstructure were observed by optical microscopy. The results show that addition of Fe filing does not have any adverse effects on the properties of green moulding sand; however, the microstructures show a dependence on heat storage capacity of the mould.

ABSTRACT Three different processes for the synthetization of exfoliated graphite intercalation compound have been tested in two different type of graphite, one in powder form and the other one as flakes. Each graphite was oxidized applying the same experimental conditions (sonification, neutralization, filtering and drying) but using three different auxiliary oxidizers (H2O2, HNO3 and KClO3) previously mixed with H2SO4. The resulting synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The Raman spectra analysis of the oxidized samples correspond to that of a graphene of few layers. Stronger delamination and exfoliation were observed in the samples of graphite, originally in powder form, treated with H2SO4/HNO3.
