Electrospun nanosized cellulose fibers using ionic liquids at room temperature
Publicaçãopor Freire, Mara G.Outros Autores: Teles, Ana Rita R.; Ferreira, Rute A. S.; Carlos, Luís D.; Lopes-da-Silva, José A.; Coutinho, João A. P.Aiming at replacing the noxious solvents commonly employed, ionic-liquid-based solvents have been recently explored as novel non-volatile and non-flammable media for the electrospinning of polymers. In this work, nanosized and biodegradable cellulose fibers were obtained by electrospinning at room temperature using a pure ionic liquid or a binary mixture of two selected ionic liquids. The electrospinning of 8 wt% cellulose in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate medium (a low viscosity and room temperature ionic liquid capable of efficiently dissolving cellulose) showed to produce electrospun fibers with average diameters within (470 ± 110) nm. With the goal of tailoring the surface tension of the spinning dope, a surface active ionic liquid was further added in a 0.10 : 0.90 mole fraction ratio. Electrospun cellulose fibers from the binary mixture composed of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids presented average diameters within (120 ± 55) nm. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric assays were used as core methods to evaluate the structural integrity, morphology and crystallinity of the raw, electrospun, and regenerated samples of cellulose. Moreover, the photoluminescence spectra of both raw and electrospun fibers were acquired, and compared, indicating that the cellulose emitting centers are not affected by the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids. Finally, the use of non-volatile solvents in electrospinning coupled to a water coagulation bath allows the recovery of the ionic fluid, and represents a step forward into the search of environmentally friendly alternatives to the conventional approaches. -

Functionalized Coatings by Electrospinning for Anti-oxidant Food Packaging
Publicaçãopor Dumitriu, Raluca P.Outros Autores: Mitchell, Geoffrey R.; Davis, Fred J.; Vasile, CorneliaOrigem: IC-onlineThe development of advanced formulations used for food packaging applications, which behave as protection or preservation materials and improve consumers’ health offers a route to reduced food wastage. The present study deals with investigations on the possibility of obtaining functionalized coatings by electrospinning of poly(ɛ-caprolactone), a synthetic biodegradable polymer together with vitamin E (α-tocopherol), selected as plant-based phenolic antioxidant. In this approach electrospinning allows the production of high surface area materials and thus offering an increased antioxidant activity. The electrospun fibres of poly(ɛ-caprolactone)/vitamin E were obtained, studied and their antioxidant properties were evaluated by measuring the fibre reactivity with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. The potential for extending the shelf-life of food products by using this approach is discussed. -

Publicaçãopor Duarte, Maria Eduarda CostaThe skin acts as a natural physical barrier that protects the body from external agents, making it vulnerable to injuries that require an adequate healing process to prevent infections. Chronic wounds result from an incomplete healing process and carry a high risk of infection, requiring special care and high treatment costs. In this context, dressings with antimicrobial properties emerge as a promising alternative, as they not only protect the wound from external agents but also stimulate healing and reduce the risk of infections. Thus, the aim of this work was to develop membranes incorporating active compounds with antimicrobial action using the electrospinning (ES) technique, with potential use as dressings for chronic wounds. For the production of the membranes, polyesteramides based on α-amino acids (AAA-PEAs) were used, which combine biocompatibility, biodegradability, and good mechanical properties with better interaction between cells and the material due to the presence of α-amino acids. The active compounds with antimicrobial action used were baicalin (BA) and naringenin (NAR).Initially, AAA-PEAs were synthesized from α-amino acids with different structures through solution polycondensation. The AAA-PEAs were successfully obtained, as evidenced by ¹H NMR analysis, with a molecular weight exceeding 60 kDa, which is adequate for the ES process. The thermal properties of the AAA-PEAs were shown to depend on the structure of the α-amino acid. After obtaining the AAA-PEAs, they were processed by ES. An optimization process was carried out, and it was found that using trifluoroethanol (TFE) as a solvent allowed the production of membranes with individualized fibers and almost no defects. The mechanical properties of the membranes were shown to be suitable for the intended application.Next, the active compounds BA and NAR were incorporated by ES of a solution of AAA-PEA with the active compounds. Membranes were successfully obtained from a specific AAA-PEA with certain α-amino acids and BA and NAR. Cytotoxicity tests carried out with a human dermal fibroblast cell line showed that a set of membranes, based on a AAA-PEA with a specific structure, with and without active compounds, were non-cytotoxic.Regarding antimicrobial properties, a set of membranes containing one of the active compounds proved to be promising, with the effect of the active compound being more pronounced against the Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacterial strain. The release profile of the active compounds from the membranes was also evaluated, and it was found that after 4 weeks, the release was not complete.Overall, this work demonstrated that membranes prepared from AAA-PEAs with active compounds are promising for the intended application. -

Effect of Nb5+ and In3+ Ions on Moisture Sensitivity of Electrospun Titanium/Tungsten Oxide Nanostructures: Microstructural Characterization and Electrical Response
Publicaçãopor Silva, Georgenes M. G.Outros Autores: Leão, Victor N. S.; Pereira, Michel F. G.; Faia, Pedro M.; Araújo, Evando S.In this work, Nb5+ and In3+ ions were used as dopants in titanium/tungsten oxide nanostructures that are produced by the electrospinning and sintering process, for relative humidity (RH) detection. The microstructural properties were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman and FTIR techniques. The electrical response characterization of the samples was performed by electrical impedance spectroscopy in the range of 400 Hz to 40 MHz, at 20◦C. The sensors sensitivity to moisture was evaluated in terms of the impedance variations to RH (10–100%). The combined analysis of the microstructural characterization results confirmed the surface interaction between the oxides and the ions incorporation in Ti crystal lattice. All the studied sensors showed a conduction transition from p-to n-type at around 30–40% RH: besides, they also displayed better sensitivity to moisture than those obtained in a previous work using titanium/tungsten combination using a different fabricationn route. The impedance modulus variation up to 1.1 and 1.3 orders of magnitude for the 4 wt % niobium and indium doped samples, respectively. The results are directly associated with the microstructure and alternative preparation process. -

Zn2+-Doped TiO2:WO3 Films Prepared by Electrospinning and Sintering: Microstructural Characterization and Electrical Signature to Moisture Sensing
Publicaçãopor Silva, Georgenes M. G.Outros Autores: Leão, Victor N. S.; Pereira, Michel F. G.; Faia, Pedro M.; Araújo, Evando S.In this work, Zn2+-doped TiO2:WO3 nanostructured films, with different doping levels, were produced by electrospinning followed by sintering, and tested as potential materials for relative humidity (RH) detection. The materials microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrical characterization was performed by electrical impedance spectroscopy in the range of 400 HZ–40 MHZ, at 20 C. The sensors’ sensitivity to moisture was evaluated from the impedance variations in response to changes in RH (10–100%). The analyses confirmed the interaction of water molecules with the oxides surface, and showed that zinc atoms were incorporated into the titanium vacancies in the crystal lattice. All the studied sensors showed a p- to n-type conduction transition taking place at around 40% RH. The nanocomposite with 2 wt% of dopant presented the best sensitivity to moisture, with an impedance variation of about 1 order of magnitude. The results are discussed in relation to the microstructure and fabrication route. -

Photocrosslinkable Nanofibrous Asymmetric Membrane Designed for Wound Dressing
Publicaçãopor Alves, PatríciaOutros Autores: Santos, Marta; Mendes, Sabrina; Miguel, Sónia P.; Sá, Kevin D. de; Cabral, Cátia S. D. et al.Recently, the biomedical scientists who are working in the skin regeneration area have proposed asymmetric membranes as ideal wound dressings, since they are able to reproduce both layers of skin and improve the healing process as well as make it less painful. Herein, an electrospinning technique was used to produce new asymmetric membranes. The protective layer was composed of a blending solution between polycaprolactone and polylactic acid, whereas the underlying layer was comprised of methacrylated gelatin and chitosan. The chemical/physical properties, the in vitro hemo- and biocompatibility of the nanofibrous membranes were evaluated. The results obtained reveal that the produced membranes exhibited a wettability able to provide a moist environment at wound site. Moreover, the membranes' hemocompatibility and fibroblast cell adhesion, spreading and proliferation at the surface of the membranes were also noticed in the in vitro assays. Such results highlight the suitability of these asymmetric membranes for wound dressing applications. -
